Mike:
At the low end you get NAT and everything you need to direct incoming to the
right place (what most mean by routing) in an entry level Linksys - DLink -
etc, with one Lan port and one Wan port.
Just above this is a device with 4 or 8 ports so you can give wired access
to user who are not members of your internal network/domain, and have no
credentials, such as guests or visiting bird watchers, what have you.
Just above this are the same devices with wireless capability.
And above that, you start to get more secure, with device to device VPN's
which keep the connection open, but require a software piece on the remote
traveling computers that have no matching hardware between their computers
and the internet, for example when you / your boss is at a convention.
And above that are true firewalls that offer the ability to keep (mostly, if
anything was perfect the pentagon would never get hacked) any body, any
thing, any virusi, spam, malware off your network. It is this class of
device that will be the perimeter requirement when SBS 2008 is installed.
For now, you have ISA to do this for you. When the next version arrives, and
if you truly like ISA, and are getting good with it, you can purchase a copy
and install it on a separate server at your gateway, or you can do this with
a firewall appliance such as Watchguard, SonicWall, etc.

Mike,
I'm confused about one thing: Just because a router has a firewall and/or
NAT doesn't mean you have to use those features. Couldn't you buy an
inexpensive firewall/router and use only the router section?

I've got a 4-port now. That should do it. I threw in 8-port incase that
made a difference in availability.

Sorry, I had read the tangent about SBS 2008, its NAT firewall (or lack
thereof) and thought you had decided to look at an integrated
router/firewall. I haven't looked for *just* a router in years. One
odd question of point though, do you need an 8-port router?!? What I
mean by this, specifically, is will you actually be declaring separate
routes on each port? Or do you really need a two-port router with a
built-in switch (most consumer 'routers' are actually this.)
It makes a *HUGE* difference in both recommendation and price...

Sorry, I didn't see a router on that site.
I must have missed the boat on routers. I've gone to ebay, Amazon, PC
Connection, Consistent Computer Bargains, CDW and HP trying to find a
SOHO router - I can easily find wireless routers, firewalls, switches,
TMG's and UMG's. But a "plain" 4- or 8-port router is getting scarce
to find. Are plain old routers going away? And if so, what do I look
for? (If it helps, I've got ISA 2004 and a D-Link L2?l3 managed
switch.)

I gotta say I've recently begun to have a love-hate relationship with
watchguard. They make a rock-solid appliance, reliable as hell, and I
promoted them for years, but their decision to only provide software
updates to active livesecurity memberships bugs me. Don't get me
wrong, I can understand not giving up Fireware v8, or upgrades from v8
to v9 for free. Buy an upgrade. But the patch to get v7.4 to v7.5
(might be off on the version slightly) to fix the daylight savings
update ALSO required an active subscription...which runs in the
thousands per year. That's just getting greedy.
If you want something that plays well with SBS (or a Microsoft shop in
general) check out Celestix. They make appliances that are really ISA
wrapped up. Fast, reliable. I love 'em.

Hi Mike,
Then how about a Watchguard, Cisco ASA or Juniper appliance ? There's
plenty to choose from, depending on the number of users you have etc
and you'll get UTM services too. They're not cheap but like
everything else, you get what you pay for :)
Regards Colin.

Naw, the boss is unhappy about the downtime, so I think quality and
fault-tolerance are more important than price.

We had severe weather hit yesterday and last night knocking out
power for short periods of time. I've got my server on an UPS,
but not the router. I was gone for a couple days and found this
morning that the internet access was down. Quickly found that the
rotuer was the culprit -- it had "reset" to settings I haven't
used in almost 6 months when we had another ISP. It's a cheap,
no-longer-supported, SOHO router that I need to replace.
My question is in two parts: (1) What business class router would
you recommend (5 to 10 ports)?; and (2) Will this class of router
"hold" onto the current settings during power outages (short-term?
