RE: Problems with Permissions

Hi Wayne,

I am really happy to hear that you resolved the issue. It is a nice
experience that work with you on this issue. You great efforts and detailed
information is very helpful for us to narrow down the root cause and
accelerated our troubleshooting. Thank you for your time and patience.

It appears that you are dealing with multiple issues that will require
individual attention to ensure that we are not counter-productive in our
support efforts. A suggestion in this case would be to post these issues
separately so that contributors within this newsgroup who specialize in
certain feature will be able to provide the 'value add' to resolving these
issues.

It is important to us that we provide you with the best support possible
and by breaking down these issues separately we will be able to address
them appropriately and in a timely manner.

However, personally, I would like to share some experience here. Your
thought is right, ISA is performing as a web proxy server in this scenario.
In fact, we recommend that you to install Firewall Client on each client
computer in order to access the Internet. To install Firewall Client, it is
recommended that you create a shared folder for the Firewall Client
installation files, and then follow the instructions as below to use the
Set Up Client Applications Wizard to deploy Firewall Client to each client
computer. To add Firewall Client for deployment to client computers:

1. Click Start, and then click Server Management.

2. In the console tree, double-click Client Computers, and then in the
details pane, click Set Up Client Applications.

3. On the Available applications page, click Add. The Application
Information dialog box appears.

4. In the Application Name box, type Firewall Client, and then in the
Location of setup executable for this application box, type
\\ServerName\Mspclnt\Setup.exe /v"SERVER_NAME_OR_IP=ServerName
ENABLE_AUTO_DETECT=0 REFRESH_WEB_PROXY=1 /qn" where ServerName is the name
of your server. There are no spaces within the command except before /v,
ENABLE, REFRESH, and /qn.

5. Follow the instructions to complete the wizard.

6. When prompted to assign the new application to client computers, click
Yes. The Assign Applications Wizard appears.

7. Follow the instructions to complete the wizard.

Note: The Set Up Client Applications Wizard only works with client
computers running Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional or Microsoft Windows
XP Professional. If you have a client computer running a different
operating system, you must manually connect to the shared folder from the
client computer. From the client computer, click Start, click Run, and then
type \\ServerName\Mspclnt\Setup.exe, where ServerName is the name of your
server.

8. To check the name of your server, click Start, right-click My Computer,
and then click Properties. The computer name is the first label before the
period listed in the Full computer name, for example,
ServerName.smallbusiness.local.

And about the issue that cannot connect to router's administrator website,
I would like to suggest that you try the following:

1.Contact Linksys technical support to check whether there are special
configure should be set on their device in this scenario .

2. Configure the client IE to use proxy server manually and add the
intranet websites as exceptions in IE connection settings. To do this,

a. On the client, open Control Panel-->Internet Options.
b. On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
c. Configure the setting as the following screenshot:
d. Click Advanced. Add the server's IP, FQDN and the URL to the Exceptions
list. Use semicolons (;) to separate entries.
e. Click OK twice to save the changes.

3. It may occurs if you set two default gateway on SBS server. Please refer
to the following KB article:

Only One Default Gateway Allowed on Proxy Server
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/161380

If the problem still persists, please help to collect the following
information for further analysis:
1. Check can you ping the router's IP from client.
2. Check whether the router's IP is correct and listed under DHCP server's
address pool.
3. Run the command: tracert 192.168.71.1 > c:\tracertlog.txt, and send the
log to me.
4. Check event viewer for related information, if there are any, please
help save it to *.evt and send to me.
5. Run command "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig_sbs.txt" and "route print >
c:\route_sbs.txt" on SBS, send the files c:\ipconfig_sbs.txt and
c:\route_sbs.txt to me.
6. Run command "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig_client.txt" and "route print >
c:\route_client.txt" on problematic client, send the files
c:\ipconfig_client.txt and c:\route_client.txt to me.

For Windows Live install issue, please try that clean up your previous
windows live installation from Add/remove. Also, you may like to try
install it more times because it may due to server is busy. And you can
contact https://support.live.com/ for support.

Hope it helps and have a nice day:.

| Hello Gary,
|
| Finally you will be pleased to hear that I now have almost everything set
| up and working properly. It was a very simple configuration problem that
| resolved everything - originally the RJ45 network cable that went from
the
| server to the router was plugged into the 'Internet' port on the router,
| but I changed this to one of the regular network ports on the router and
| ran the Internet and Email configuration wizard again, and it solved the
| problems immediately. I don't know why it wouldn't work when plugged into
| the 'Internet' port as you would imagine that was the correct way to
| configure it, but for whatever reason that's where the problems
originated
| from and I now have almost everything working as I would expect now.
|
| There are still a few small issues that I cannot resolve at the moment,
but
| I think these are minor problems that I will be able to fix over the
course
| of the next few days with the help of the newsgroups.
|
| I'm not sure why but I can't currently access the router's web interface
on
| either the server or the Windows XP Professional machine, previously it
was
| simply a case of entering the router's static IP address into my web
| browser (http://192.168.71.1/) but when I do this from either the server
or
| XP machine, I receive the following web page error message:
|
|

The

| " Contact website: You may want to contact the website administrator to
| make sure the Web page still exists. You can do this by using the e-mail
| address or phone number listed on the website home page.
| If you are still not able to view the requested page, try contacting your
| administrator or Helpdesk.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

|
| I do have ISA Server 2004 installed on the server machine and although I
| have looked at this piece of software in some detail, I haven't made any
| configuration changes to it yet simply because I am very unfamiliar with
| ISA Server and I don't yet feel confident enough to make changes to the
| configuration - when I ran the Internet and Email Setup on the server,
all
| of the configuration changes were made automatically to ISA Server and my
| instinct tells me this may be where the problem lies with not being able
to
| access the routers configuration page at the moment.
|
| Initially I did experience a similar problem on the XP machine with not
| being able to access some web pages, but I solved this by opening IE,
| selecting Tools > Internet Options, selecting the 'Connections' tab > LAN
| Settings
|
| From this Window I placed a tick in the box 'Use a proxy server for your
| LAN' and 'Bypass proxy server for local addresses', in the Address box I
| typed 'server' and in the Port box I typed '8080' - that then gave me
full
| Internet access from the Windows XP machine. I did the same on the server
| and although I can access the Internet on both machines just fine, I am
| still unable to access the routers configuration web page.
|
| I may be wrong but I believed that ISA Server was also a Proxy Server and
| when you access the Internet with ISA installed, you would access it
| through the Proxy server and as such mask your ISP Static IP Address, but
| when I navigate to www.whatismyip.com it still shows my current ISP
Static
| IP - as I said I have very little experience with ISA so I am sure it is
| simply a case of me not configuring something properly, but I will spend
a
| few days reading the help files and Microsoft's Technet Support web pages
| to see if I can figure these problems out for myself.
|
| The only other problem that I am currently aware of is on the Windows XP
| machine; I can download and install software with no problems at all, but
| everytime I try to install any of the Windows Live services I seem to
have
| a problem. If I navigate to www.windowslive.com and run the installation
| for 'Windows Live Messenger', 'Windows Live Mail', 'Windows Live Photo
| Gallary' etc, the installation displays a red cross next to all of these
| programs with an error message saying 'Sorry, we couldn't install these
| programs'. As I mentioned before, I can install any software on the XP
| machine without a problem but the Windows Live Services simply will not
| install and I have no idea why - would there be a reason for this? or
| perhaps the problem is at Microsoft's end?
|
| Anyway, I'm not too concerned about these small issues for the moment ...
| my main problem has now been fixed and in no small part that came about
| through your help and for that I am very grateful. If you think you may
| know how to resolve the other small problems I've mentioned in this
email,
| I would certainly be very grateful to hear from you again, but for the
| moment you can consider this problem solved.
|
| Thanks again for your patience and determination to help me, I genuinly
| would not have been able to do it without your help.
|
| Kind Regards,
| Wayne

| | Hi Wayne,
| |
| | Thanks for your update and efforts.
| |
| | For the "Network Configuration Wizard" not accessible issue, please
check
| | the following:
| |
| | 1. Open IIS, navigate to Web Sites\ConnectComputer, right click it
and
| | choose Properties.
| | 2. Click on Directory Security tab, then click Edit under the
| | "Authentication and access control" option, make sure the checkbox of
| | "Enable anonymous access" is checked.
| | 3. Click on the Edit under "IP address and domain name restriction",
| make
| | sure you have granted proper permission to the current IP you are using.
| | 4. Add the http://server.e-techsupport.local/ to your IE's trust
site.
| To
| | add a website to the trusted zone list in Internet Explorer. Please
| follow
| | the steps below:
| |
| | a. Click the Start Button, type inetcpl.cpl in the Start Run box, and
| then
| | press Enter.
| | b. On the Security tab, click "Trusted sites" and then click "Default
| | Level".
| | c. Click Sites, type the URL of the site
| | <http://server.e-techsupport.local/> in the "Add this Web site to the
| zone"
| | box, uncheck the "Require server verification" option .
| |
| | 5. Check whether it can be access again.
| |
| | The DHCP not working properly issue may due to DNS not correctly
| | configured. Please check the following:
| |
| | 1. Run the command: ipconfig /all on SBS server, make sure both
internal
| | NIC and external NIC are using the internal NIC's IP as DNS server.
| | 2. Open Start\Administrative Tools\DNS.
| | 3. Make sure your server's FQDN have correct DNS records.
| | 4. Right click on the server's name, choose Properties, then navigate
to
| | Forwarders tab, make sure the two ISP's DNS server IP is listed there.
| | 5. If possible, change the Linksys wireless router to another switch
as
| a
| | test.
| | 6. Re-run CEICW carefully following my previous reply again.
| |
| | About the wireless router, I think Linksys's suggest may right because
| they
| | should be better understanding their product. Also, please double
confirm
| | with them that your configuration and the topology are correct.
| |
| | If the problems still persists, please check event viewer for related
| | information, if there are any, please help save it to *.evt and send to
| me.
| |
| | Hope it helps.

| [Problems
| | | with Permissions] with Gary Wang (94820911)
| | |
| | | Hello again Gary,
| | |
| | | Since I last exchanged email messages with you, I have made some
| progress
| | | but I'm still experiencing a few problems. I'll try to explain what
| I've
| | | done and the progress I have made so far, and I will also outline the
| | | issues that I am still experiencing.
| | |
| | | In my last email to you I indicated that I was in the process of
| | | reinstalling Windows Small Business Server 2003 - this has now been
| | | completed and I followed the instructions to the letter in order to
| | | configure the server for Internet access. The good news is I now have
| | | Internet and some Network access on the server, which is certainly an
| | | improvement on my previous configurations. At the moment I can access
| the
| | | Internet just fine, and I can also open up the internal SBS 2003 home
| | page
| | | by navigating to: http://server.e-techsupport.local/ but I am still
| | | experiencing one or two problems when I try to navigate further using
| the
| | | links on this Internal website.
| | |
| | | If I click the first link 'My Company's Internal Website', the page
| loads
| | | without any problems, if I click the second link 'Network
Configuration
| | | Link' I receive a 'The page cannot be displayed' error message, at
the
| | | bottom of the page it says 'Error Code: 403 Forbidden. The server
| denied
| | | the specified Uniform Resource Locator (URL). Contact the server
| | | administrator. (12202).
| | |
| | | If I click the third link on the SBS home page 'Remote Web Workplace'
| | | initially I receive the following error message: There is a problem
| with
| | | this website's security certificate' the options available to me from
| | this
| | | page are: 1) Click here to close this webpage. 2) Continue to this
| | webpage
| | | (not recommended) or 3) More information. If I select option 2)
| Continue
| | to
| | | this website (not recommended), the page does display but with the
| | | following errors: The URL box at the top of the browser displays the
| | | website URL but coloured in red and next to the URL is another red
box
| | | which says 'Certificate error'. Also at the very top of the webpage I
| | have
| | | an error message where I often see messages asking me to install
Active
| X
| | | controls, but this message reads: 'To help protect your security,
| | Internet
| | | Explorer has blocked this website from displaying content with
security
| | | certificate errors. Click here for options'. If I click the red box
| next
| | to
| | | the URL which says 'Certificate error', and then select 'View
| | Certificates'
| | | and 'Install Certificates', then follow the wizard to install the
| | | certificate, I receive a message that says the 'Import was
successful'.
| | | Click OK, navigate to the home page again:
| | | http://server.e-techsupport.local/ and select 'Remote Web Workplace',
| the
| | | page displays without any certificate errors - which is what I would
| | | expect, but often this certificate error message will reappear later
| when
| | I
| | | navigate to that link again, or if I reboot the server - sometimes by
| | | installing the certificate it will resolve the problem but this seems
| to
| | be
| | | only temporary.
| | |
| | | Also I seem to have a problem with DHCP on the server, by navigating
to
| | | 'Control Panel' > 'Administrative Tools' > and clicking the DHCP
icon,
| | when
| | | DHCP opens, it lists the DHCP server but says it's 'Not connected',
| | however
| | | when I click on this server within the DHCP control panel, the DHCP
| | server
| | | starts without any further interaction, and it appears to continue
| | running
| | | for as long as I have the DHCP window open but the moment I close it,
| and
| | | reopen it again, it says 'Not Connected'. When I navigate to 'Control
| | | Panel' > 'Administrative Tools' > 'Services' and check the status for
| | 'DHCP
| | | Client' and 'DHCP Server' both are listed as 'Started' with Startup
| Type
| | | set to 'Automatic' but even when I right-click these services and
| select
| | | Restart, it makes no difference - the DHCP window has to be open
before
| | the
| | | service will run.
| | |
| | | I believe this issue with the DHCP server is also responsible for the
| | lack
| | | of connectivity I have from the Windows XP machine also, as I am
unable
| | to
| | | join that machine to the SBS 2003 domain. I have created a User
Account
| | and
| | | Computer using the Server Management Console but when I Enable the
| | Network
| | | Connection on the XP machine, it takes a while to obtain an IP
address,
| | but
| | | when it does it shows 'Limited or No Connectivity' with a yellow
symbol
| | | covering the network icon in the taskbar. I have also tried to
connect
| | | Wirelessly from the XP machine but again I receive exactly the same
| error.
| | |
| | | I feel sure that the problem I have with DHCP on the server is
causing
| | this
| | | problem but I really have no idea how to fix it. I have already
| | uninstalled
| | | DHCP and reinstalled it but that made no difference, and I have also
| | | disabled DHCP within the Linksys Router, so I am sure there is no
| | conflict
| | | there.
| | |
| | | One other point that I should mention, and I'm not sure if this
matters
| | but
| | | in your previous response you gave a list of instructions for me to
| carry
| | | out, and one of those was to configure the Router as a Wireless
Access
| | | Point. I did check through all of the menu options on the Router's
| | webpage
| | | but I was unable to find anything relating to setting the Router as a
| | | Wireless Access Point. so I went to Linksys website and spoke online
to
| | one
| | | of their support technicians, I explained that a Microsoft Technician
| has
| | | asked me to configure the Router as a Wireless Access Point but he
told
| | me
| | | this was not necessary to do as it would only allow one XP machine to
| | | connect to the server, and his advice was to leave it set up as a
| Router,
| | | which I have done. If you believe this advice was wrong, can you
kindly
| | | explain why so I can go back to Linksys and try to get further
| assistance
| | | with this configuration.
| | |
| | | Again, I sincerely appologise for the very long email message but I
did
| | | want to explain everything that was happening in the hope it would
give
| | you
| | | a better understanding of where the problems might be originating
from.
| | If
| | | you can see something that perhaps I have overlooked, I would of
course
| | be
| | | incredibly appreciative and grateful.
| | |
| | | With Very Kind Regards,
| | | Wayne Smith

| | | | |
| | | | | Hello Gary,
| | | | | My apologies for the delay in responding to your last post. I
| | followed
| | | | your
| | | | | instructions to the letter but still I had problems and I wasn't
| | | entirely
| | | | | sure why. I'm now in the process of reinstalling SBS 2003 just to
| see
| | | if
| | | | | that makes any difference to the outcome - at the moment I appear
| to
| | be
| | | | | having problems with my broadband connection on the server, but
if
| I
| | | plug
| | | | | that RJ45 cable into a desktop XP computer, my broadband works
fine
| -
| | | so
| | | | I
| | | | | wonder if perhaps I have a problem with one or more of the
network
| | | cards
| | | | in
| | | | | the server.
| | | | |
| | | | | Anyway, I doubt this issue can be resolved straight away so I
will
| | | spend
| | | | a
| | | | | few more days trying to solve everything on the server first and
| will
| | | | send
| | | | | you a reply sometime next week just to keep you updated and let
you
| | | know
| | | | | how I have got on.
| | | | |
| | | | | Thanks again for your very kind help and assistance, it really is
| | | | | appreciated.
| | | | |
| | | | | Kind Regards,
| | | | | Wayne

| | | | | |
| | | | | | Hello Wayne,
| | | | | |
| | | | | | Thanks for your detailed information. It is really helpful for
us
| | to
| | | | | | understanding the scenario clearly.
| | | | | |
| | | | | | According to your description, I think the issue most properly
| due
| | to
| | | | not
| | | | | | connection those device in right order. In your current
settings,
| | the
| | | | | | Linksys router is actually acting as a router. And SBS server
is
| | only
| | | | | take
| | | | | | the role of an internal server. Even though the SBS server had
2
| | NICs
| | | | but
| | | | | | they are all configured to connected to internal network. The
| | issue
| | | | that
| | | | | | SBS cannot exchange files with XP client may due to that the
| | routing
| | | | | table
| | | | | | is not correct, so that the SBS server could not know how to
| treat
| | | with
| | | | | | internal traffic request.
| | | | | |
| | | | | | Based on my experience and according to your requirement, I
would
| | | | | recommend
| | | | | | that you adjust the network topology as below:
| | | | | |
| | | | | | a. 1 RJ45 Cable from the Modem to the external NIC of SBS
server.
| | | | | Configure
| | | | | | the SBS's external NIC to use the static IP address which you
got
| | | from
| | | | | ISP.
| | | | | | b. Enable DHCP and DNS service on SBS server. Adjust the DHCP
| | | settings
| | | | | that
| | | | | | set SBS server's internal IP address as client's DNS and
default
| | | | gateway.
| | | | | | c. 1 RJ45 Cables from the SBS server internal NIC connect to
| | Linksys
| | | | | | Router's internet port and configure the internet port a
internal
| | IP
| | | | | | d. 1 RJ45 Cable from the Linksys Router to 1 XP Pro Box
| | | | | | e. Disable DHCP function on Linksys Router.
| | | | | | f. Configure the Linksys Router to work as a wireless Access
| Point
| | | | | instead
| | | | | | of a router (You may need to contact Linksys support for
related
| | | | | | information)
| | | | | | g. Run the Configure Email and Internet Connection Wizard on
SBS
| | | | server.
| | | | | | You can refer to the following article for more details:
| | | | | |

go
| to
| | | | step
| | | | | e.
| | | | | | On this page, under Connection name, click Network Connection.
| | | | | | d. Configure IP settings according to the requirements of your

| | | | | | address if the IP address is not provided by DHCP. Click Next.
| | | | | | h. Complete the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection
Wizard.
|
| | | | | |
| | | | | | Or you may like to using another alternative solution which you
| may
| | | | need
| | | | | a
| | | | | | additional switch:
| | | | | |
| | | | | | a. 1 RJ45 Cable from the Modem to the internet port of Linksys
| | | router.
| | | | | | Configure the internet port to use the static IP address which
| you
| | | got
| | | | | from
| | | | | | ISP.
| | | | | | b. 1 RJ45 cable from Linksys router to SBS external NIC, set
SBS
| | | | external
| | | | | | NIC an IP address such as 10.0.0.x
| | | | | | c. 1 RJ45 cable from SBS internal NIC to the switch. Set SBS
| | internal
| | | | NIC
| | | | | | IP to 192.168.0.x
| | | | | | d. Enable DHCP and DNS service on SBS server. Adjust the DHCP
| | | settings
| | | | | that
| | | | | | set SBS server's internal IP address as client's DNS and
default
| | | | gateway.
| | | | | | e. 1 RJ45 Cables from the Switch connect to XP client.
| | | | | | f. Disable DHCP function on Linksys Router. Disable wireless
| | function
| | | | of
| | | | | | the router.
| | | | | | g. Run the Configure Email and Internet Connection Wizard on
SBS
| | | | server.
| | | | | |
| | | | | | Two network adapters - manual router connection to broadband
| | | | | | a. If you receive a dialog box that says that a UPnP router
was
| | | | detected
| | | | | | and you want to configure the router automatically, go to the "
| Two
| | | | | network
| | | | | | adapters - UPnP router connection to broadband " section.
| | | | | | b. Click No to the question "Do you want the wizard to

| | | | | | Alternate DNS server, type the IP addresses that are provided
by
| | your
| | | | | ISP.
| | | | | | In the Local IP address of router box, type the IP address of
the
| | | | router
| | | | | | that the server uses to connect to the router.
| | | | | | f. Click to clear the My server uses a single network
connection
| | for
| | | | | both
| | | | | | Internet access and the local network check box, and then click

| | |
| | | | | | g. On the Network Connection, You must enable and configure
the
| | | | network
| | | | | | connection to your ISP page, under the Connection Name, click
| | Network
| | | | | | Connection.
| | | | | | h. If your router provides DHCP, click Obtain an IP address
| | | | | automatically
| | | | | | (use DHCP). If your router does not provide DHCP, click Use the
| | | | following
| | | | | | IP address, and then type the IP address and the subnet mask in
| | | | | accordance
| | | | | | with the router settings. The default gateway is the IP address
| of

| | | | | | k. Under the Local network connection, click Server Local Area
| | | | | Connection,
| | | | | | and then click Next.
| | | | | | l. Complete the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection
Wizard.
|
| | | | | |
| | | | | | By the way, you current scenario may also can work if you
modify
| | the
| | | | SBS
| | | | | | internal NIC by go to SBS console\Internet and Email then
| clicking
| | | | | "Change
| | | | | | Server IP Address", following the wizard to change to another
| | | internal
| | | | | | network(For example 10.0.0.x) and re-run the CEICW. Set the XP
| | client
| | | | to
| | | | | | the same network(10.0.0.x). But it may lead to potential risks.
| | Also
| | | | | | considering you have 10 clients but the Linksys Router have
only
| 4
| | | | ports.
| | | | | | An additional switch is necessary.
| | | | | |
| | | | | | Also if the problem still happens, please help to run the
| commands:
| | | | | | ipconfig /all and ROUTE PRINT on both server and client for
| | further
| | | | | | analysis.
| | | | | |
| | | | | | Hope it helps.
| | | | | |
| | | | | | Best regards,
| | | | | |

| | | | | [Problems
| | | | | | | with Permissions] with Gary Wang (94820911)
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | Hello Gary,
| | | | | | | Firstly can I say a big thank you for taking the time and
| trouble
| | | to
| | | | | try
| | | | | | | and help me with this issue, when I posted my message to the
| | | | newsgroup
| | | | | I
| | | | | | | certainly didn't expect a Microsoft support technician to
reply
| | and
| | | | try
| | | | | | to
| | | | | | | help resolve this problem, it is enormously appreciated.
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | I have checked the thread of the newsgroup post after reading
| | your
| | | | | email
| | | | | | | and unfortunately I cannot see your reply so I hope you won't
| | mind
| | | me
| | | | | | | emailing you direct.
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | I should explain that since I posted that message a few days
| ago,
| | I
| | | | | have
| | | | | | | attempted countless different scenarios to try and fix the
| | problem,
| | | | but
| | | | | | so
| | | | | | | far without any success, and I may have actually made things
| | worse.
| | | | As
| | | | | it
| | | | | | | currently stands the SBS 2003 machine is switched off and I'm
| | | | | connecting
| | | | | | | directly to the internet through my XP Professional machine
-I
| | have
| | | | | tried
| | | | | | | literally everything I can think of to resolve the problem
and
| | | right
| | | | | now
| | | | | | I
| | | | | | | must confess I feel completely drained and frustrated by the
| | whole
| | | | | | process.
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | With that said however, everything I have seen of Small
| Business
| | | | Server
| | | | | | so
| | | | | | | far leads me to believe it is worth pursuing, I am sure that
| | | perhaps
| | | | my
| | | | | | | inexperience and lack of knowledge on certain technical
issues
| is
| | | the
| | | | | | real
| | | | | | | culprit and no doubt when I do finally get everything up and
| | | running,
| | | | I
| | | | | | | will sigh a huge relief and take some important lessons
learnt
| | from
| | | | the
| | | | | | | process.
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | Just to give you a broad background of the problems I seem to
| be
| | | | | | | experiencing, what I am trying to do is set up the SBS
machine
| | with
| | | | | only
| | | | | | | one XP Pro machine connected at the moment, once I have that
| | | | configured
| | | | | | and
| | | | | | | working correctly I intend to connect a handful of other XP
Pro
| | | | | machines
| | | | | | | and possibly even one or two Apple Mac computers to the
| network,
| | | but
| | | | | all
| | | | | | of
| | | | | | | that is for later - right now my only concern is to get the
SBS
| | and
| | | | one
| | | | | | XP
| | | | | | | Pro machine talking to each other.
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | I have a broadband Internet connection through my ISP with a
| | static
| | | | IP
| | | | | | | address, I have a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router, which
I
| | | intend
| | | | | to
| | | | | | | use for the client machines to connect to the Internet
through
| a
| | | | | wireless
| | | | | | | connection, but at the moment I am content to connect this XP
| Pro
| | | box
| | | | | to
| | | | | | | the router with a network cable. On the back of the router,
| there
| | | are
| | | | 4
| | | | | | | network cable ports and one Internet port, in the SBS machine
I
| | | have
| | | | | two
| | | | | | | RJ-45 NIC's. And I also have a broadband modem provided by my
| ISP.
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | No matter how I try to configure everything, I seem to have a
| | whole
| | | | | range
| | | | | | | of different outcomes except the one I want. Obviously the
| ideal
| | | | | solution
| | | | | | | would be to have the SBS machine set up and configured for
| | network
| | | | | access
| | | | | | | and Internet access, with each client machine connecting
| through
| | | the
| | | | | SBS
| | | | | | | machine for network & Internet access, but I seem to get
| Internet
| | | | | access
| | | | | | on
| | | | | | | the Server and no network access, Internet access on the
Server
| | and
| | | | XP
| | | | | | Pro
| | | | | | | box but no network access, network connectivity from the
Server
| | to
| | | | the
| | | | | XP
| | | | | | | Pro box but not the other way around ... and just about
| anything
| | | else
| | | | | you
| | | | | | | could imagine except what I really want.
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | Although I maybe wrong in my assumptions, I feel sure the
| problem
| | | | lies
| | | | | | | either somewhere with the way I have the Router connected and
| | | | | configured
| | | | | | or
| | | | | | | the way I have assigned IP addresses to the network cards and
| | | perhaps
| | | | I
| | | | | | | have included too much information below, but I would much
| rather
| | | you
| | | | | | know
| | | | | | | how I have everything configured from the start, and to spend
a
| | | | | | | considerable time checking things only to find I have made a
| | simple
| | | | | | mistake
| | | | | | | with part of my configuration later that I failed to mention
| from
| | | the
| | | | | | | beginning.
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | The network is currently configured as follows:
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | Internet Connection
| | | | | | | > Broadband Modem provided by ISP with one Static IP Address
| | | | | | | - 1 RJ45 Cable from the Modem to the 'Internet' port on the
| | Linksys
| | | | | Router
| | | | | | | - 2 RJ45 Cables from the Linksys Router to 2 NIC's on the SBS
| Box
| | | | | | | - 1 RJ45 Cable from the Linksys Router to 1 XP Pro Box
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | The two NIC's on the SBS Box are labeled as follows:
| | | | | | | - Server Local Area Connection
| | | | | | | - Network Connection
| | | | | | |
| | | | | |
| | | | |
| | | |
| | |

============================================================================
| | | | | | | =======
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | I have proceeded through the Internet & Email connection
wizard
| | in
| | | | SBS
| | | | | | 2003
| | | | | | | countless times to change different IP Addresses and other
| | | | configurable
| | | | | | | options, simply to see if anything else made a noticeable
| | | difference
| | | | | but
| | | | | | | the way I have everything configured at the moment is giving
me
| | | | | Internet
| | | | | | | access on both the SBS Box and the XP Pro box but no network
| | | | | | connectivity,
| | | | | | | although I can log on to the XP machine using the credentials
| | that
| | | I
| | | | | | | created on the SBS Box but I cannot exchange files between
the
| | two
| | | | | | machines
| | | | | | | or browse either computer in My Network Places.
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | If anything looks immediately obvious to you, that perhaps I
| have
| | | | | | | overlooked, I would of course be incredibly grateful for your
| | | | feedback.
| | | | | I
| | | | | | | have even tried plugging the RJ45 cable from the Broadband
| modem
| | | into
| | | | | one
| | | | | | | of the network ports on the Linksys Router and then one RJ45
| | cable
| | | | from
| | | | | | the
| | | | | | | 'Network Connection' NIC on the Server to the 'Internet' port
| on
| | | the
| | | | | | | Linksys Router, more out of curiosity than anything else
simply
| | to
| | | | see
| | | | | if
| | | | | | | it solved my problem, but all that seems to do is give me an
IP
| | | | Address
| | | | | | | conflict when I configure the IP Address to the static IP
| Address
| | | as
| | | | | | | provided by my ISP.
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | I realize this may possibly seem very complicated to someone
| who
| | | | isn't
| | | | | | | sitting in front of my network, and to be fair it's even more
| | | | | complicated
| | | | | | | to someone who is, but any help, suggestions or pointers
would
| be
| | | | | greatly
| | | | | | | appreciated.
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | | Kind Regards,
| | | | | | | Wayne Smith

| | | | | | | | Hello Wayne,
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | Thank you for your post and thanks for Cliff's great inputs.
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | My name is Gary Wang, and it is my pleasure to work with
you
| on
| | | | this
| | | | | | | issue!
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | Please allow me to confirm that my understandings are
| correct.
| | As
| | | I
| | | | | | | | understand it, the issue is:
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | You cannot create network share place from SBS server to XP
| | | client
| | | | | even
| | | | | | | you
| | | | | | | | had delegate full control permission to the share folder.
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | If I have misunderstood your concerns please feel free to
let
| | me
| | | | know.
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | Suggestion :
| | | | | | | | ==============
| | | | | | | | I would like to suggest that you check the following:
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | 1. Check whether you can ping the XP client's computer name
| and
| | | IP
| | | | | | | address
| | | | | | | | from SBS server.
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | 2. Please check the shared permission and NTFS permission
of
| | the
| | | | | shared
| | | | | | | | folder on XP, to ensure your user account have full
| permission
| | of
| | | | the
| | | | | | | | folder.
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | 3. Please ensure you join the client computer to SBS domain
| | thru
| | | | | | | | connectcomputer wizard. We recommend that the client
connect
| to
| | | | | | | | http://SBSServername/connectcomputer and following the
wizard
| | to
| | | | join
| | | | | | SBS
| | | | | | | | domain.
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | 4. Please try to create a new shared folder on XP and then
| test
| | | | this
| | | | | | | issue.
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | 5. If there are any firewall/anti-virus software on the XP
| | | client,
| | | | | | please
| | | | | | | | disable it temporarily as a test. Note that please perform
a
| | full
| | | | | scan
| | | | | | to
| | | | | | | | make sure your system is clean before disable them.
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | 6. Make sure File and Printing Share protocol is enabled on
| the
| | | SBS
| | | | | | | server.
| | | | | | | | Please go to Control Panel - Network Connections, double
| click
| | | your
| | | | | NIC
| | | | | | | and
| | | | | | | | choose Properties. Make sure the "File and Printing Sharing
| for
| | | | | | Microsoft
| | | | | | | | Network" is checked.
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above
| | steps,
| | | | | please
| | | | | | | | help me collect some information for further investigation:
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | Information Need
| | | | | | | | ==============
| | | | | | | | 1. Please run the command: ipconfig /all on both server
and
| | | | client,
| | | | | | then
| | | | | | | | post the result back here.
| | | | | | | | 2. Please capture a screenshot of the exact symptom and
send
| | to
| | | me
| | | | | at
| | | | | | | | v-gzwang@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
| | | | | | | | 3. Check event viewer for related error message. If there
| any,
| | | | | please
| | | | | | | save
| | | | | | | | as *.evt file and send to me
| | | | | | | | 4. Does this issue happen on every XP client?
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | I look forward to your reply. Also, if you have any
questions
| | or
| | | | | | | concerns,
| | | | | | | | please do not hesitate to let me know. I am happy to help.
:-)
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | Thank you for your time and cooperation!
| | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | | Best regards,
| | | | | | | |

| | | | | | | | | Hi everyone,
| | | | | | | | | I wonder if someone may be able to help with a
Permissions
| | | issue
| | | | I
| | | | | | | have,
| | | | | | | | I've got one SBS2003 machine up and running, and to the
best
| of
| | | my
| | | | | | | ability
| | | | | | | | configured correctly, I've added a Windows XP Pro machine
to
| | the
| | | | | | | computers
| | | | | | | | and created an account for myself with Administrator
| | privileges,
| | | on
| | | | | | both
| | | | | | | | the SBS and XP machine I have shared certain folders and
| | included
| | | | my
| | | | | | | | account in the Security with full permissions, from the XP
| box
| | if
| | | I
| | | | | go
| | | | | | to
| | | | | | | | My Network Places I can create a new network place using
| those
| | | | shared
| | | | | | | | folders from the SBS box, but if I try to do the same from
| the
| | | SBS
| | | | | box
| | | | | | by
| | | | | | | | creating a network place to a shared folder on the XP
| machine,
| | I
| | | | get
| | | | | an
| | | | | | | | error message saying the network path cannot be found or I
| | don't
| | | | have
| | | | | | | | permission to access it.
| | | | | | | | | I'm at a loss as to what I may be doing wrong because
| clearly
| | | my
| | | | | user
| | | | | | | | account is configured in Active Directory as I can log on
to
| | the
| | | | | | Windows
| | | | | | | XP
| | | | | | | | machine using the credentials that I created in AD. Just
for
| | | | clarity
| | | | | | the
| | | | | | | | SBS box is also a Domain Controller if that makes any
| | difference.
| | | | | | | | | Can anyone see something obvious that I may be
overlooking?
| | | | | | | | | Any help, pointers or suggestions would be greatly
| | appreciated.
| | | | | | | | | Kind Regards,
| | | | | | | | | Wayne
