Re: SBS backup failing, but is it?

Tell us about the backup device and media?

Did the "good" and "failed" jobs use the same device and the same media?

Now ya got me diggin to make sure what I know is correct! One server was
failing with C is not a valid drive. Next I ran the job during the day and
the job ran fine, along with that night. The next job failed with the message
about bad data.
The second server has failed only one day with the message bad data.

Clear as mud?

Backups are what writes the data to tape, and verify is what confirms that
the written data can also be read from the tape. It's very possible that
you've really got either a hardware or a tape failure issue, and that you
won't be able to restore those tapes. The first thing I would do is to test
a restore (I usually create a test directory containing a GB or so of
useless data, back it up, delete it, and see if I can restore it).

Even if a test restore works flawlessly, turning off verify is definitely
not recommended - aside from MS obviously thinking it's a critical part of
the backup process, I think you'll find your hardware vendor recommends it
as well. So even if your hardware test out perfect, I'd troubleshoot and
repair this rather than just turning off verification.
