While it is a pain, one might consider:
1- stopping the flow of mail, (pull the plug on the internet, disable the
nic, etc)
2- get two or three backups of the current data base,
3- then copy it in its raw form to a safe place.
4- then restore the backup of the database that contains the public folder
you need
5- copy the data out to .pst
6- restore the current backup made in step 2. Worse case you could copy
back (forklift) the raw copy made in step 3.
7- copy the relevant data from step 5 to wherever you would like in the data
base, if required.

Thanks. Unfortunately the item was deleted well outside the retention
period.
I have a server (different domain) with no public folders in use to which
I could try to restore the public folder database.
I've never tried it to a different domain but I'll have a look this
evening.

Ahh. Missed the part of your post where you said it was a public folder.
I saw email and did a canned response. Sorry.
You really only have two options (that I'm aware of.) 1) Check and see
if you turned on deleted item retention. If the box wasn't whittled down
until after the restore, the deleted item might still be in there.

The article applies to Exchange 2007, but Exchange 2003 is similar in
this functionality.
Secondarily, use a backup machine to restore the original backup and
check manually. Exmerge does not work with public folders either, so if
you need to retain that email and get it on the production server, the
only way I know to do this is via outlook and a temporary PST. I suppose
you could unmount the store and copy the database files, but you'd lose
any new emails that have come in since the backup...so I guess I don't
consider this a useful option..but perhaps it fits in your environment.

Hi Cliff
Thanks for the response.
This is for Mailbox Store recovery not Public Folder Store recovery
(privn.edb not pubn.edb)? - No?

Sounds like a perfect job for the recovery storage group. If you
aren't familiar with this feature, check it out:

But be forwarned, it is a bit in depth, so it may be beneficial to
bring in some outside help familiar with the process and train
alongside them.

Hi
I need to search a public folder for a particular email. The folder
is contained within an NT Backup taken from a decommissioned Dell
Win2003SBS SP2 machine..
The new server is an IBM replacement running Win2003SBS R2. The
Public Folder was migrated but has subsequently been cleared down to a
date after that of the sought for email. The Servers have identical
domain and computer names.
Any advice gratefully received.
