Re: Cannot login locally to the SBS box

Hi Dieter:

Glad you have it working.

Failed main board is one of the few reasons that OEM Windows can be
installed on new hardware. There is no proof needed, but you may have to
call MS to authenticate. And you may not, depending on if you are able to
replace it with the same board. But if "the identical board" is not
available, you are allowed an exception for replacing with a different one.

There are software products that allow for backup and restore to different
hardware. If it comes to that, look at ShadowProtect or Adonis.

Hi Larry,

I disconnected the SBS box from the KVM switch and put in an usb keyboard
and mouse. It works, for now. I'll see if it will keep on working.

If the mainboard is gone I have a problem with my OEM SBS premium I guess.
Touch wood, cross fingers.

Thanks again

Regards
Dieter

With no other info to go on, I think you have a hardware problem. If the
system is non responsive with a plain mouse and keyboard directly
attached, I would shut it down remotely, put an obstacle in the way of it
restarting, like a blank floppy or unplug the drives, and do some test
starts.

Might help to have both ps2 and usb kb and mouse at hand, if the server
will allow either type.

And, if all of that was non functional, put it back together, boot it up
normally so people can work, manage it remotely until the hardware guys
can replace the main board.

Hi Larry,

I thought it was unusual. There are no errors in the event logs.

I changed the KVM switch, cables, mouse and keyboards, the lot to no
avail.

I have a user that uses RWW in the weekend to login to the system but he
does that to his own PC, I hope.

When a user does not logoff from RWW but shuts his PC off, could that
cause such a problem?

It sounds like paranoia but I have no clue.

Thanks for your swift answer.

Regards
Dieter

That is an unusual error. When you connect remotely, are there any
errors in the event logs?

The usual thing we see is the server is responsive from the console,
but the admin is prohibited from local logons.

Any chance the KVM switch is faulty? Or that the keyboard and mouse
are unplugged?

Hello,

1 SBS 2003 SP1 server, 1 Windows 2003 member server as a DC, 15
clients XP Pro SP2 (working on SP3)

Recently I get this unusual error. I cannot login to the SBS box in
the morning, specially after the weekend. It does not respond to the
CTRL+ALT+DEL or mouse or using the keyboard. As far as I can see
everything works as it should, I can connect using the RWW, there's
nothing in the events log that looks like an error.
All programs work, all connections work.

The only thing I can do is shut it down on the remote, but that makes
a mess of some data people were working on. I asked them to stop
working, I checked that they did but afterwards I had to use the
bachup to put the data back.

The most recent change is I started using Exchange and I'm not 100%
sure that everything is configured as it should.

Please what is the best way to troubleshoot this? (apart from learning
a decent trade.)

Thanks in advance

Regards
Dieter
