Re: Licensing on SBS.. that 75 limit

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Handled at the network level, not file-lock level. Don't forget that every time a machine powers up, it connects to SBS to get group policy updates. Every time a user logs in, the same. This all is handled by various services (most notably netlogon) that won't show up as a "filehandle" so to speak. So yes, that 75 is pretty reliably hard to circumvent.

Yes, I have applied the TP. There are no nightmares, it works just fine. It's not an instant process, you need to do some preparation (as you would have to for ANY major install/reconfiguration of your server!), but it definitely works. There are several threads here about the TP in the last week or so, please search and read them for details.

On question of what happens at 75 users? You stop being able to connect, I believe. Honestly, I don't know since I've never come close to 75 active users or devices.

My strong recommendation is to make the transitition well before you bump up against the upper limits. One solution that may be of interest is to look at moving to Essential Business Server. It's not shipping yet, but getting close, and will provide a smooth transition to an environment that is a natural extension of what's been done in SBS, while giving you the ability to grow your business up to the 250 user/device range. But, of course, it does require three servers.

Thanks Charlie.. I'll definitly check the threads.

With regards to the 75... I've been pushing for the Trans pack for 6 months... :(

Any idea what counts as a "connection" ? Would that just be File handles /printers or Exchange too??
