Re: Backing up Sharepoint content, and Exchange mailbox's

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Cy,

Make sure you understand that the link you posted refers to restoring SharePoint to the original server. If you want to restore on a completely new server the following document describes the process http://support.microsoft.com/?id=827701

The following link shows the syntax on how to backup just a site collection (e.g. http://companyweb) or perform a catastrophic backup. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc287967.aspx

Thank you costas you've been very helpful. I actually looked into this link
that explains it.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829112&Product=sbs

explains where you can do it via NTbackup or stsadmin. it also gives and
example of a script you can create for a daily backup.

I'm just curious about the synax of stsadmin if you can only point it to the
default. http://companyweb. Anyway I just wanted to thank you for you help
and post this extra link for anyone to use.

For SharePoint, you should look into 'stsadm -backup' command. Search
Microsoft's site for backup and recovery for SharePoint sites. Make sure
you understand the differences between backing up a site vs. backing up for
a disaster scenario. There is a write up on the site that shows the
different options you can provide on the stsadm.exe utility. You can then
create a scheduled task to perform this task

For Exchange you can also create a scheduled task using NTBackup to backup
the Information Store, along with the System State.
