Re: Transition Pack Run - but no DFS-R?

I don't have direct knowledge here, Chris. I've asked my sources for
a copy of the R2 TP so I can run some tests, but all my original
tests were done before R2 shipped, so the R2 TP wasn't available yet.
I would hope and expect that continuing the R2 installation would be
the correct option. I guess the telling question is whether it wants
you to provide an additional PID. If not, then you should be OK.

I will post detailed result when they finally get me an updated TP.
And probably have Susan post it on her blog. (My blog being pretty
much 64-bit stuff only.)

Can't speak well to the transition info, but R2 is definitely two different
products. The SBS one has the WSUS stuff and missing the DFS-R, schema
updates, and the other standard windows R2 goodies. Two products, two SKU's
and two licenses.

Now if a R2 TP buyer *should* be getting the standard R2 media and license
is a different matter.

R2 is not an update but rather an upgrade (i.e. there is a cost to
it) and I don't consider myself qualified to answer whether the TP
gives you the right to "upgrade" using the other media
Because the TP is labeled R2, one might infer that you can.

Since I don't typically work with standard server versions, Charlie
maybe be better equipped to answer the question regarding "continuing
the installation"

it's not about findiing fault, but you stated "reviewed the newsgroup
thoroughly" , but it would appear you chose not to take the advise
given in your own previous postings

on 4/28/2008 you posted with the subject " Does Transition Pack then
allow use of DFS Replication Service"

Charlie clearly pointed out in that post "Careful. I said R2, not
service pack. SP2 doesn't include the R2 bits,
that's a separate issue."

I replied after that "
Just to make sure Charlies Point is crystal clear
If you apply the Transition Pack to your SBS server, you wind up
with a Windows Server 2003 at SP1 or SP2 (which ever you've applied)
You would then still need to spend extra dollars to upgrade that to
Windows Server 2003 R2 to get DFS Replication Services"

And Charlie reiterated again
"Yes. R2 is a separate upgrade"

I'm sorry that you got bad advise when speaking with someone at
Microsoft, but we gave you the definitive answer last week.

Cris,

I definitely appreciate your taking the time to advice me on both my
posts. I tried to take the advice of not only you wise men but also
Microsoft consultants. When we received the TP labeld Windows 2003
R2, I was under the impression that would take me where I needed to
be. I need to slow down and deliberate a little more, I guess.

Now after running the 'W2K3 R2' Transition Pack and being at Windows
Server 2003 Standard SP2 (Version 5.2 Build
3790.srv03_sp2_gdr.070304-2240: Service Pack 2) where do I go from
here? I do have Windows 2003 R2 discs - can I use them to upgrade? KB
Article 912309 implies that the second CD can be used but
when I do so the installation menu gives me the option to 'Continue
with Windows Server 2003 R2 Setup'. Is this the option I need?

Thanks again guys. Cris - I respect and honor your advice. Thanks for
helping me through this.

-brian
