some of the AU ISP's do not even rely on the auth, I am not sure where they
set the IP but have guessed the ADSL port at the Exchange, possibly on the
DSLAM. AFAICS it is the physical line that is assigned the IP.

Such services do not require auth. They also do not assign the IP based on
anything about 'client equipment', I have changed routers/modems without
informing the ISP and got same IP. No configuration of the device was
required.

It's not unusual for a 'static' IP address at an ISP to actually be
a DHCP reservation, just as you might do when you want a
fixed-address SBS LAN client.

Hmmm. Sure, it's possible, but I've never run into that myself,
honestly. In order for this to happen, the ISP would first have to
know the MAC address of my firewall/hardware appliance (whatever I
was planning on connecting to their modem or router), wouldn't they?

With any of the ISPs I've worked with (from consumer to commercial),
it's always either a static (usually a block of at least 5) or it's a
regular dynamic "first come first served."

FYI, I've come across a number of ISPs here in the UK that do indeed
use DHCP reservations for 'static' IPs. Our Broadband supplier,
PlusNet, are a case in point. You can either configure your
router/firewall to the assigned static IP address, or you can set it
to dynamic, in which case the same address is delivered via DHCP upon
PPPoA authentication (the reservation is tied to the authenticated
session, not a device's MAC address). Indeed, they offer a standard
dial-up service as a backup. If you authenticate via a dial-up
connection, you are actually delivered the *same* IP address via DHCP,
too.

Ah. Interesting. I'm a bit glad I've never run into it in the States,
though - I'm a control freak & like to know what I'm getting. But thanks
for the info!
