Hello!

Since Leythos and Colin lurk around here, I thought I'd ask for some
real-world experience with WatchGuard firewalls. I just got an X Core X550e
NFR unit, and my first impression was "Oh, man, this thing is LOUD!"

Loud is relative, I have some personal fans that are louder.

The big bummer is the main client I have been priming for it has the server
in his office, and adding this unit would likely drive him to pound a stake
into my heart. The only other option is their small vault, but that might
get too hot.

So, those of you with real-world experience, if the noisy X550e is mounted
in a 6' x 8' vault with 14" thick concrete walls and 4" thick steel doors,
do you think it would get too hot when the vault is closed at night? They
leave the vault open during the day. How much heat can the X550e generate?

Personally, I would never put a rack/server/appliance in a sealed room
unless the room was large (and yours isn't) or had some form of AC to
keep it stable.

I would never put a server in a person's office, it belongs in a
lockable area. Heck, even the APC SU2200 makes a lot of noise when it's
charging.

I would hate to lock it up in such an enclosed space all night, but the
alternative is the stake, and that doesn't look too good either!

BTW, it came with Fireware 9.1, which I updated to 9.1.2. I have Fireware
Pro 10.1, but I have not installed it yet. I will probably just go to 10,
since I have never touched a WG before, and I may as well learn what is
current.

Thank you for your opinions.

Computers/Servers are not quiet, if they are quiet they are not moving
much air.

You can't install a NFR unit at a customers location anyway, that's only
for your internal use.

I'm running 10.x on my test units, 9.x on clients units, and 7.4.1 on
all older units. I will move to 10.x once it's been out long enough.
