Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

What kind of errors do we have in the event logs?

Hi Merv

The exact error that BPA provides is

"Setup could not verify the integrity of the Update.inf. Make sure the
Cryptographic service is running on this computer"

However I have checked & this service is running, maybe I'll try
re-registering the DLL files as pointed out in this document

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

I may try & get the owner to cough up & purchase a new server but doubt
he'll go for this

This is SBS Premium but no ISA but is behind hardware firewall that is
password protected & the connection is stable, there's also logmein
installed so could utilise that as well

Cheers

IMHO, if you try to upgrade the server from SBS 2003 RTM at this point,
you may get into a worse condition than you are now. You need to first
make sure that the server can handle an upgrade to SBS 2003 SP1 (i.e.,
Windows 2003 SP1 may require a BIOS upgrade on the server before you
begin). Assuming that the BIOS upgrade is not required, I would still
want a fully functional SBS server before upgrading, especially remotely.
You can disable the tape drive in favor of the external USB drive and
then re-run the Backup Wizard to set up your backups correctly. If this
is SBS 2003 Premium with ISA installed, remote upgrade can be done but
should only be attempted using a straight RDC to the server (not a VPN as
the upgrade will kill ISA/RRAS at a certain point).

What is the exact text of the error message you get when you try to
install the SBS 2003 BPA?

Hi

Cheers for the reply but one issue I'm 300 miles from this server so
would be a long trip just to flatten/reinstall especially if I can
upgrade from my location. I understand it would be best practice in the
long run to do this but cost factor is against me

So the backup device is broke, this confirms why backups have been
getting done to an external HDD for a while

I do believe this server could be brought up to current R2 but I do
expect a few problems along the way, hence I thought it best to ask from
experienced users

Cheers

QIC157 sounds like an IDE Travan drive so you should assume you have no
backups either.

I would goto www.sbsmigration.com and investigate a full 'Swing to same
hardware', flatten, reinstall, update.

and then I'd get a tape drive that works.

Don't you just hate when you slip on the keys:)

Let me just finish that:)

1) Server has 2 Xeon CPU'S, 4GB Ram & NO service packs at all, SBS
scheduled backups do not run due to the following error or fail after
30 minutes. Additionally hardly any of the SBS Wizards work correctly

Event Type: Error
Event Source: qic157
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11
Date: 29/04/2008
Time: 20:26:01
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER
Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Tape0.

I have tried to run the BPA but it will not install

Now I assume the backups & other wizards are failing is due to not
having any service packs installed so I am planning on installing SBS
Service Pack 1 as this also contains Windows Server SP1 & then trying
to stabilise the server after this.

Does anyone have any pointers for a successful install or pitfalls
that I need to be wary of as this is a live working server & don't
wish to cause to further problems

Thanks in advance

Franky
