Dan, Paul, thanks for your answers. Yes Dan this is a useful example.
And I would love to keep it simple. But it is still not clear to me
is how safe this simpler setup is? Isn't your client worried of
having a unprotected physical link between their server and the
outside world? Are you suggesting that a DSL modem dedicated to VoIP
traffic is not a serious threat, even if not under the watch of the
Sonicwall? Sorry for asking dumb questions but couldn't a very
talented hacker somehow find a way to ping the server or any of the
clients through that door? Or is that just impossible? I admit I am
reaching the limits of my technical expertise here.

Who's going to be connecting anything to it? It's for the phones. And if
more protection is needed, get a cheapo NetGear or Linksys for this
connection. There is no benefit to passing this through the sonicwall.

One NIC or two would be no different if you're talking about the
switch on the LAN side Charles. If you're really worried about the
VOIP traffic you could investigate the Enhanced OS option for the
Sonicwall as Paul suggests in the his post. I was just trying to
explain my simpler setup, which works just fine.

Dan, thanks. Now, I am not sure I understand why having one NIC on
the SBS instead of two would make a VoIP connection bypassing the
firewall safer? That one NIC would still plugged into the same
switch, wouldn't it?

We have SBS standard SP2, two NICs, behind a Sonicwall TZ 180.
We want to add a second DSL feed to the network, which will be
dedicated
to
VoIP; and obviously would like it to go throught the Sonicwall.
Does anyone
know how to do this?

As I am new to the Sonicwall, any step by step guidance much
appreciated.

Thanks,
Charles

Charles, I have a client with a somewhat similar setup to what
you're trying
to do, and as Lanwench suggests, the VOIP connection bypasses the
Sonicwall
TZ 190 but reconnects after the Sonicwall to a common switch to
share the same cabling in the building. The server, however, only
has one NIC. I do not see why you need a 2 NIC server setup behind
a Sonicwall firewall. Some
say you can't have too many layers of security but to me the
second NIC just
adds unnecessary complexity when you have a strong firewall like
the Sonicwall. Be interesting to see what others have to say....
