Is the security tab present on other files on the same drive? Usually a missing security tab would indicate a FAT drive instead of NTFS.

I can't "take ownership" as the security TAB does not exist for the folder. Also using subinacl from the resource kit fails with a 0x0100ADA8 error, google finds nothing for this error code.

There was also a c:\boot and a c:\program files (x86) folder which is wierd (SBS is just 32bit afterall)... but I removed them after confirming their contents weren't useful.

And c:\users folder, and this folder is some how linked to the c:\documents and settings folder, the contents alter in both simultaneously.

I've seen some third party apps screw up the permissions in a way that isn't usually detected.

It should be easy to fix though. The key is to use the "take ownership" button and make sure you are taking ownership of all subfolders.

Once you've taken ownership then you can reset permissions properly.

Did you do all other security updates prior to doing trying SP2?
There is a known issue with trying to install SP2 if there are a large number of other updates installed
Did you run the BPA as Merv suggested?

Yes it's set to 1, the antivirus software wasn't installed when Sp2 failed. (wasn't 'live' yet. / Using trend CSM)
Yes the regular administrator account.

I used cacls to check and set the permissions, but it still refuses to let me even view c:\documents and settings\all users.

And I can't even understand why there is a c:\users\all users, or copies of administrator/default user they all seem ok except of course "all users".

That article is for "users shared folders" which isn't where I am having issues.

Check this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer

Then look at the ServicePackNumber key. Is it set to "1"? If not, SBS 2003 SP1 may not have installed correctly.

Also, have you tried turning off your antivirus software (or other 3rd party software) on the server and then running Windows 2003 SP2?

Are you installing Windows 2003 SP2 using the Domain Administrator account?

Check permissions on the All Users folder...

Administrators: Full
Everyone: Read & Execute, List, Read
System: Ful:l
Users: Read & Execute, List, Read

After isntalling and running it, updating the problems it highlighted, it had 2 issues.
#1 POP mail connector (I didn't bother with this as it wont ever be used)
#2 SP2 for windows 2003 which fails to install.

The crazy magic folders of nonremoval remain intact.

Hi I have the oddest problem I have ever seen, the c:\documents and settings\all users is untouchable, as is c:\users\all users

I have not changed permissions intentionally or at all.

When logged in as administrator I can't browse / move or rename the folder, also a new all users.windows folder is created. If I right click properties the folder there is no security tab.

I have run xcacls / cacls to try and veiw / change permissions on this folder, it changes but still i Can't browse it.

When I try to run windows 2003 Sp2 it fails to install as it wants to write a bunch of .bmp files to the all users\application data folder.

What should I do ?
