I was hoping I could just modify the registry or some .ini file, etc.

No, not that I know of. (and ini files? Not in XP!)

What if I just leave it alone?, it doesn't bother anyone but me.

If you didn't rename it properly you need to ensure you haven't done
something bad to its ability to communicate with the domain controllers.

Thankyou Both for your help, I'll try it again this weekend.

I have disconnected a lan workstation, changed the workstation name,

reconnected via the wizards properly, no problem came up.
At Server Management: Advanced Management: Computer Management
(local):System tools: Shared Folders: Sessions: The list of active
sessions shows the computer with the OLD computer/workstation ID.

The Computer ID at the workstation has been changed.
The Computer ID in "Client Computers" has been changed and reflects
the new name.

How can I get the "Sessions" computer name to reflect the new name?

To rename a computer in the domain, do not disconnect it. You don't
need to run any wizard for this, either. While logged into the
workstation with admin rights, rename it, and provide the domain
credentials. Reboot when prompted. The computer is now renamed.

If that isn't what you did, you'd best start over with the wizard,
I guess, after disjoining the domain.
