Re: Migration/Install SBS 2003 & Win Server 2003 Service Pack Ques

Larry,

The files on the CD state 9/30/2003 for file creation. It sounds about
right because I believe we purchased it from Dell in late 2003/early 2004.

I attempted to install service packs and it stated neither Sharepoint or
Exchange had been installed. The problem may arise in that I must use a
"Dell Systems Build and Utility Update" at startup for installation, prior to
loading the SBS 2003 disks, for the server to even recognize the Hard
drives(s). They are set up as Raid 1. Part of me just wants to start from
scratch.

This may be the same reason the Swing wasn't working for me as well.

But your issue remains... if the media is RTM, you have to do all the
updates, including SP1. If the media is SP1, you are in much better shape.
I don't have any RTM installs left, and only a couple SP1, but if you can't
figure it out by any other means, post back.

I would like to be able to say: "If you purchased the media after July X
200X it is definitely SP1, but since old product does float around, we can't
say that.

I have found this site helpful:

Larry - thanks much. The SBS 2003 was a stand alone copy purchased about
a
year after we purchased the existing server so it's not OEM. I attempted
to
check the file version but it's not shown using either method described
(didn't try MS tool for ferretting out). I went into the registry to see
what was shown there and it shows folders for Service Packs 1 and 2 but
nothing is in them except one file under SP1 with a version 5.2.3790.196.

I'll review the Merv Porter post and also wait for any other post here
before proceeding with the SP installs. Thanks much for your help so far.

Carlos:

Merv Porter posted this a few days ago, see if it helps.

If we look at the File Version properties of the
c:\windows\system\setup.exe
file, we should see:

Windows 2003 RTM... 5.2.3790.0 (srv03_rtm.030324-2048)
Windows 2003 SP1... 5.2.3790.1830 (srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447)
Windows 2003 SP2... 5.2.3790.3959 (srv03_sp2_rtm.070216-1710)

In reviewing your post, I think that the media that you are using to
create
the new SBS installation on your new hardware should be explicit as to
the
service packs it contains. If it does not say SP1 or SP2, then it must
be
RTM. Another way you can tell is to use one of the tools that MS
provides
for ferreting this out of the installation. Also, Start - My Computer -
rclick - Properties - General.

In any case, if you are using older media, it might be the media that
came
with your original server. You should review the kind of license you
received with that media, because if it is an OEM version you should not
install it on new hardware.

Should it turn out to be RTM, you will have to go through the SP1
procedure
before installing SP2, although it is possible to substitute Exchange SP2
and Windows SP2 for the SP1 modules in the list of items to be installed
to
bring the server up to current levels.

While it is possible, note that Windows SP2 introduces issues of its own,
and therefore we recommend that you do Windows SP1, get everything
stable,
then Windows SP2, then the follow on items to resolve the SP2 issues.

And, run the SBS BPA and resolve any issues it finds.

I'm migrating our SBS 2003 SP2 over to a new machine. I'll continue to
use
SBS 2003. I've already looked into SBSmigration.com and have tried it.
We
have no access to a migration or virtual server so it's out. Jeff
offers
great support but the method just wasn't working for me. So, I am
following
the steps outlined in 'Migrating Windows Small Business Server 2003 to
New
Hardware' located at:
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServerSolutions/SBS/en/library/62e2094e-ad4e-4227-b20e-97a716ed7c861033.mspx?mfr=true

I am doing just fine but I get to the where I check on the new machine
Windows Server 2003 for SS 2003 version and I see it is 'Version 5.2
Build
3790' and not 'Version 5.2 Build 3790 Service Pack 2'. I'm worried
about
this not having the correct service pack. When I continue to look into
installing SP2 it appears I need to install SP1 for SBS 2003. I'm
afraid
this will screw everything else up. Any thoughts?
