Possible Mail Relay or just new usages of returned mail by spammers

This morning I opened up Outlook to discover that three of our Inboxes
were filled with hundreds of system administrator: returned messages,
mail daemons reporting undeliverables, mail delivery systems reporting
delays. All of messages I didn't send. Those that showed subjects
were the usual spam messages. Has my system become a relay? Or is
this just a new development in the delivery of spam?
