After restoring the "setup.exe" it does say 5.2.2893.0 like SP1. So over the
weekend I will try to restore my server and I will get back later on with the
results.
Thanks

So I wonder if MS made any changes to NTbackup for Windows 2003 SP2 (my
guess is they did not). If not, we should only need to determine if the
server was at RTM or SP1/SP2 prior to the backup and then upgrade the
reinstalled Windows base OS to that level before the restore.
Maybe Mario can do this "service pack" test for us to see what the SP level
is on his backup.

Wait a minute, I may have stumpled onto something....
What is that SBS Service Pack level
http://duitwithsbs.wordpress.com/2007/10/30/what-is-that-sbs-service-pack-level/
Assuming the backup device is portable (i.e., an external USB hard
drive), we should be able to move the device to a Win XP Pro workstation
and view the backup using WinXP NTBackup. Then we can restore the
following 'setup.exe' file in the backup to a location on the WinXP
workstation:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business Server
2003\setup.exe
Then right click on setup.exe file, go to Properties and note the File
Version:
File version 5.2.2651.0 indicates pre SBS SP1 (which means WIndows 2003
RTM is installed)
File version 5.2.2893.0 - post SBS SP1 (which means Windows 2003 SP1 is
installed)
Now, this doesn't tell us if Windows 2003 SP2 has been installed. Anyone
got an SBS server handy with Windows 2003 SP2 installed who can tell us
if the file version in setup.exe is different for it? I tend to doubt
that it will be different since we're dealing with the SBS 2003 setup
file and not the Windows 2003 file.
A better way may be to restore the Windows 2003 'setup.exe' at:
C:\Windows\system32\setup.exe
and
(rt. click) setup.exe | Properties | Version (tab) | (click on) File
Version in the 'Items Name:' list
The File Version 'Values' should be:
Windows 2003 RTM... 5.2.3790.0 (srv03_rtm.030324-2048)
Windows 2003 SP1... 5.2.3790.1830 (srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447)
Windows 2003 SP2... ???????????
This should tell us exactly what we need to know. Can someone with an
SBS machine with Win2003 SP2 installed please confirm the File Version
info?

I think the problem here may be that the poster has a backup of the
server but does not know what Windows 2003 SP level the server was at
when the backup was taken. This is a problem if the server has not been
documented and it crashes and can't be logged into. For quite a while
now I've been looking for some way to find the SP level information from
the individual files in a backup but I've come up short. Without knowing
the SP level before hand, the restore can be an exercise in frustration
as you currently have 3 choices: Win2003 RTM, Win2003 SP1, Win2003 SP2.

Hi Mario:
Not sure I follow you. The instructions mean that if your SBS was
Windows SP1 you must update your box to SP1 so that you have the same
underlying files that are on your backup. Once you have the same
Windows service pack on your box that you have on your backup, you can
then restore the backup to the box.
If we are discussing Windows SP1 here, note that it is not necessary to
install the other components of SBS SP1, as they are already on the
backup.

Hello to all,
In the Microsoft's document "Backing up and Restoring Small Business
Server
2003" v5, it is said to birng the new install to the same service pack
level.
So from the backup I have, where can I look to get the service pack
installed?
Thanks
