Hi Terence Liu
Thank you for taking time to respond and helping me with my problems.
WinVNC4 is a remote administration server software which I had to install to
get access remotely to the server regardless of RWW.
However, I put great respect in your expertise so I have done as you
suggested and uninstalled the 3rd-party software.
1. I haven’t installed any anti-virus software on the system yet. I wanted
to get rid of all the troubles that I have until I move on to improve the
system security.
2. If you really insist on disabling the startup items as well as the
non-Microsoft services I will do that. But I doubt that will fix the problem
with RWW.
The startup items are Server Management and the Service Manager (for the MS
SQL server) which are all Microsoft applications.
The services that you wish me to disable are:
Hansoft Project Server – A critical business application for the company.
Used for project planning and deadlines etc.
DynDNS Updater Service – Just a DNS service that updates the dynamic IP from
the ISP to the DNS-name of ours, which is required as we don’t have a static
IP.
FileZilla Server FTP Service – A simple FTP service that has it’s own
account manager and permissions manager. It doesn’t use windows permissions
or user accounts. This is also critical for the business.
The reason I want to get a second confirmation from you is that I doubt that
these services cause problems to the RWW. WinVNC4 however uses a lot of the
built-in Windows components for example permissions and NT accounts for
authentication from remote clients. Therefore I have no trouble to uninstall
it if you believe that is a cause.
The server is actively in use everytime so if you have any suggestions to
minimize server reboots I would be very greatfull.
Please advice again.
Best Regards,
Niklas

Hello Niklas,.
Thank you for your update.
From your event log, I found many following error. This is a 3rd-party
software on the SBS.
=================
Event Type: Error
Event Source: WinVNC4
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1
Date: 4/9/2008
Time: 4:01:49 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SBS-SRVR
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( WinVNC4 ) cannot be found.
The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or
message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be
able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and
Support for details. The following information is part of the event:
WinVNC4, error:unable to launch process: The parameter is incorrect. (87)
[session 3, state 1].
==================
I suggest you perform the following steps:
1. Do you install any antivirus software on SBS? The real time scan of
antivirus software may corrupted the RWW files. I suggest you disable or
uninstall it from SBS and then, test this issue.
Note: Please also try to uninstall the WinVNC4 on SBS.
2. Please do clean boot on SBS to narrow down this issue:
To clean boot the problematic computer, please use the steps below:
a. Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks). Click OK.
b. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click to select
the Selective Startup button.
c. Click to clear the check mark from the "Load startup items" below
Selective Startup.
d. Click the Services tab, click to check the "Hide All Microsoft Services"
box, and remove all the check marks from the remained Non-Microsoft
Services. Please note that the Exchange services could be marked as
non-Microsoft. Please do not disable those services.
e. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.
f. After restarting, please check whether this issue will reoccur.
g. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root cause
of this issue.
3. If the issue persists after the above steps, we need to reinstall RWW on
SBS:
A. Open Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.
B. Click Change/Remove for Windows Small Business Server 2003 in Add or
Remove Programs:
C. Click "Windows Small Business Server 2003" and click on "Change/Remove".
D. Follow the setup prompts until you reach the "Component Selection"
dialog screen.
E. Set the "Server Tools" to "Reinstall", and set all its subcomponents to
"None (Installed)".
F. Complete the setup wizard. You'll be prompted for CD3, point it to the
SBS cd3 folder.
After we reinstall the RWW, we need to run the CEICW again.
Then, test this issue.
I hope these steps will give you some help.
Thanks and have a nice day!
Best regards,
Terence Liu(MSFT)
