Re: SBS Backup and RSM

Tami, I can only speak for SBSBackup and with that your not mucking things
up.
Its designed to do these full backups, both on files and DBs. If you have
doubts about SQL, create a maint scheme and create flat-file copies of the
DBs.Keep It as simple as possible with as small changes as you can, every
change creates uncertanties the day you have to do a full restore. Specially
if these changes are not documented.

SBSBackup works perfect for me (knock on wood) i havent been forced into a
full restore irl. And I am sorry to say Im not practising enough either.

Sry for any misspellings..

I heard you could muck things up...backing up live exchange, databases
etc???

I would use the NT backup information store backup, and already exclude
the
SQL databases...just backing up the logs??

Thanks for your help.

My suggestion Is that you backup everything, the day that comes when you

I have not had to do a full restore since the SBS 4.5.

But I have performed file restores. and large SQL log restores off of
the
VXAs.....with no issues...and AFAIK...there is not really full system
restore
with SBS.....its a full system install and patch....before you can
restore....might as well reconfigure and just restore the data.

I am unsure of what the issuue is with the VXA.....and when I purchased
these 2 servers and the SBS 2003, I installed the VXA2 drives in them
and
they have worked ...since 2004. Until now....although they still
work...as
I
can use the NTbackup software...which BTW I use to restore
files....just
cannot use the builtin SBS backup.

The servers are at the end of life and will be replaced by new
hardware....I
just cant see the backup operators taking harddrives home
everynight...for
offsite backups...tapes are just so much easier.

I was just pointing out the issue with the RSM.........I cannot believe
it
is a hardware issue when it occurs on several different hardware
combinations
not only experienced by me.

I greatly exceed the min requirements for SBS with both these
servers.....yes lets blame it on the marketing department for not
clearly
defining the hardware requirements.

I guess the 10 years or so of working with the SBS ond all versions
since
its release I havent come across an issue such as this which has been
addressed by MS....I just thought I would let people know of my work
around.

BTW VXA when it first came out ......... was orginally highly
recommended
by
Jeff Middleton who I have the utmost respect for as he (and others on
this
site) really helped me overcome issues I experienced the SBS when I
first
started using the OS.

Like I said has worked just fine since I first installed a VXA1 in a
SBS
4.5.

Thanks for all the help....anyone got that link I orginally asked
for???

The link to what needs to be backed up, and what can be skipped in a
full
system backup???

Thanks.

Tami

Wow that really funny that the VXAs worked for the last 3
years....and now dont?

No clue - I wouldn't be using it outside of a home/home office
environment.

Have you ever had to do a full restore?

and if I was running an Enterprise server...in an enterprise
environment...then I am sure I would have the budget for an
enterprise
solution

I don't buy a cheaper server because I'm supporting a small office.
Since
they're likely only going to have one server, I overengineer them.

ah but seeing I am running a SMALL BUSINESS SERVER in a small
business environment....and have BTW have used VXA tape drives for
the last 6 years or so...which BTW are on the MS HCL list for the
SBS
2003....

Fine - your experience trumps mine, I suppose.

and if it is not a viable solution for SBS....why is VXA on the
HCL??

I have no idea - I don't pay attention to MS marketing people either
:-)

There is a problem with the RSM...and a quick search of issues with
SBS backup failure ...would show it is not just a VXA\Dell issue.

Thanks anyway.

Tami

RSM is one of the least well documented parts of Windows, I think. But
I
use
tape drives all over the place and I don't have this problem with any
of
them. I just don't use inexpensive tape drives. I think you get what
you
pay
for - if the customer can't swing a good tape drive I go for
inexpensive
removable hard drives.

Sorry I can't help further.

OK...I continue to have issues with the scheduled SBS backup...and
the Removable storage manager.

On 2 seperate machines\site.

The only thing similar is they both have SBS sp1 installed, use
vxa2
tape drive (on the HCL)...and are Dells...one has dual xeaons, one
has a P4, both have raid 5.

The only way I can get the backups to run...is to log into the
server and using the RSM...mark the drive as clean. Then the SBS
backup will run.

I have resigned to the fack not to use the SBS backup anymore and
will use a scheduled NT backup.

Does anyone have a link to the files needed to perform a full
system\data backup of the SBS.

What files to skip...etc etc.

I thank the forum for all its information given previously...most
of
the hotfixes wont install...as they are already installed.

I feel this is a problems with the OS software...particularty the
RSM....and not hardware related at all.

Nope - you need to do all kinds of kluging to make VXA work at all
with NTBackup, as I recall.

Too bad the only answer I have come across is to not use tape
backup...well if MS SBS 2003 is not compatible with tape back up
then they should remove all devices from thier fricken HCL!!

Tami

Tape backup works very well - you just aren't using
enterprise-class
tapes. VXA is simply not suitable. SCSI-attached LTO drives (or
SDLT, DLT, or even DAT) work fine.

If you can't swing the pricer tape drives, stick with USB drives &
swap them out.
