From an external computer, verify that you can telnet to the SBS on port 25.
Preferably, you'd open a command prompt and type "telnet mail.yourdomain.com 25" substituting the server name your MX record points to for mail.yourdomain.com. If you can't do that (say, because the MX record currently points to a hosting company), then make sure you can telnet to your SBS external IP. "telnet <IP> 25"

You should get a response that looks like this:

220 mail.yourdomain.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.3959 ready at Thu, 3 Apr 2008 15:59:24 -0400

And use the command "quit" to disconnect.

How can I make sure my SBS 2003 Exchange is ready to receive email?
Thanks!
