Re: No sound over Remote Desktop Connection to SBS server

Hi Cris

Its a long story however in simple terms I we are an 24/7 breakdown /
recovery company. Jobs come into the server at which point the program plays
a sound to notify the 'controller' staff that a job has come in. At night the
controllers work from home connecting in via RDC. The reason why I am using
the Server to do this is that we need two simultaneous connections for two
controllers, which XP obviously cannot provide. The sound is required because
the sound actually wakes up / notifies the controller that a job has come in.
I have tried using a VPN connection and calling the data from the server but
this is way too slow, however the sound does work because the program is
running on the workstation.

I hope that makes sense.

Maybe I need to take a step back and start again, really dont want to use
the server in that way it is a last resort to be honest.

Thanks for your reply.

It might be more helpful if you told us what it is you need to hear from the server
If you are trying to set the SBS server as a media server and then listen/view over a rdp session, I think you're approaching it incorrectly

There is also a checkbox somewhere (not at my server right now) about sound (under advanced settings on the connect screen I think)

Hi there

A pretty strange obscure problem I really hope somebody can help me with.

Basically we have an SBS server which I must be able to connect to via RDC
and recieve sound on the connecting PC.

I have installed a cheap sound card on the server hoping that this would get
the sound working, however despite all the drivers installing fine and the
sound does work on the actual server, sound over the RDC still will not work.

When I load DXDiag during the remote session and open the Sound tab it
reports the following error:

Sound Devices
-------------
Description: Microsoft RDP Audio Driver (emulated)
Device ID:
Manufacturer ID: 1
Product ID: 24
Type: Emulated

Driver Version:

Registry: OK
Sound Test Result: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT =
0x8878000a (The request failed because DirectSound resources, such as the
priority level, were already in use by another caller.)

Here is the output from dxdiag during the console session:

-------------
Sound Devices

I have tried lots of combinations with no luck. The only thing I could find
on the problem was a very old post which said this is a known bug and the
workaround is to start Media player before connecting. This didnt work either.

The connecting PC is Windows XP Professional which rules out the Group
Policy setting.

Would very much appreciate some help on this.

Thanks alot
.
