RE: Cannot connect to shared Fax on SBS from Vista

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi Terence,

After installing Vista Business on a Laptop, joined it to the domain and
installing Outlook 2007. I can connect to the Fax on Server.

This Laptop currently has no AV, so that got me thinking. I uninstalled
Kaspersky off the Problem PC and I can now add the Server Fax to the Fax
accounts in the Fax console.

Would it help to exclude current files from the AV to allow the connection,
if so which ones. I had already tried excluding the Fax Console itself but
clearly this hadn't worked. Does anyone know which files or processes I can
exclude from the AV?

On another note, The PC which had the problem now runs extremely fast
without any AV. I mean at least five times faster. I'm going to seek out
alternative AV products to see which one works best with Vista.

Thank you for your suggestions Terence.

Hello Brandan,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you unable to access
\\SBSname. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to
let me know.

Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:

1. Please rerun the CEICW to make sure your SBS 2003 server have right
network configuration. Go through the follow KB and rerun CEICW carefully.

How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825763/en-us

Detailed steps for your reference:

a. On the SBS 2003 Server open the Server Management console. Go to
Standard Management\To Do List.

b. Click the "Connect to the Internet" link.

c. When navigating to the Firewall page, select "Enable firewall" and click
Next.

d. On the "Services Configuration" page, select all the items and then
click Next.

e. On the "Web Services Configuration" page, make sure "Allow access to the
entire Web site from the Internet" is selected. If you select "Allow access
to only the following Web site services from the Internet", make sure all
items in the list are selected. Click Next.

f. On the "Web Server Certificate" page, choose to create a new Web server
certificate and then type the public domain name (your public DNS name)
that you will use to access OWA and RWW (for example, if your public domain
name that you use to access the sites is www.xyz.com, you should type
www.xyz.com as the new certificate name).

g. Go through the remaining steps.

2. Please ensure you install the following hotfix on your SBS:

Windows Small Business Server 2003: Windows Vista and Outlook 2007
compatibility update
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=926505

3. Ensure your join the Vista client to SBS domain thru connectcomputer
wizard. If you do not join Vista client to SBS domain thru connectcomputer
wizard, please perform the following steps:

a. Disjoin domain: Right click My Computer->Properties->Computer Name
tab->Change button->Select Workgroup->click OK twice and reboot it.
b. Create user account and computer account thru the Add User Wizard:
SBS->Server Management console->Users->Add a User
c. Rejoin domain thru connectcomputer wizard on client: On the client,
access http://SBSname/connectcomputer/. Finish the wizard and reboot it.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Does this issue happen on all Vista clients?

2. Gather MPS network report on SBS:

a. Download MPSrepot_network from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe.

c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
take 10~15 minutes.

d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| Hi All,
|
| Running Windows 2003 SBS Sp2 with Exchange Sp2.
|
| My workstation is running Vista Business 32-bit, I am logged on as a
| administrator locally and on the domain. UAC if switch off. Permissions
| have been set correctly on Fax share.
|
| All the XP Machines on the domain work fine with the Shared Fax.
|
| I can see the Fax server on the server. However, when I try to add the
| Server Fax account in the Vista Fax console I get 'The mentioned fax
server
| is not available'.
|
| I have tried all combinations of \\servername etc.
|
| What is strange, is when I try \\servername all I get is the blue circle
and
| nothing. Doesn't even time out, unless I log off and log back on again.
|
| I also tried to access the Fax Mail Transport settings in Outlook 2007
which
| has the same problem. Double click and then blue circle which never
times
| out.
|
| Seems there are many postings on the internet but no resolve. Although
not
| all problem descriptions are clear. Hope more is a better description.
|
| Your help would be greatly appreciated as I fear this problem will appear
| everytime I join a Vista PC to a Domain. As I have tried this with a few
| other vista PC's.
|
| Many Thanks
