Not wishing to knock a good AV discussion, but I think we missed a KEY point.
In principle, Yes you will need a license for each mailbox.. but it's not quite a straight-forward as that
AV vendors do not sell SINGLE server and/or exchange licenses
They are licensed PER client. The PER client usually being the workstation AV license as part of a 'groupware suite'.
EG..
Server+exch + 10 lan client machines
This will need 11 licenses for Mcafee active virus defense SMB or Symantec Corporate or AVG etc...
If you use exchange via the web, you have to count them as well
Plus if you use DAV to access the files on the server over https you have to count them as well.
So in most SMB's where a couple of senior managers/owners/directors access mail & files from their home you have to add in spare (unused ish) licenses
So
Server+exch +10 lan clients + 2 web clients = 13 licenses
Oh and if you have a 'smartphone' you need to add a license for that as well, just like you would need an SBS device cal for it..
In principle it will be the number of SBS user and device CALS you need + 1
BUT... some vendors count things differently and even then things change with vendor packages..
If you 'mix-n-match', which (in theory) IS the security 'best practice' recommendation [av product 1 scanning mail & web access, av product 2 on server filesystem, and av product 3 on client]
you will need a stack of licenses and have a management nightmare..
so
server+exch + 10 lan +2 web would need
13 licences of av product 1
13 licences of av product 2
10 licences of av product 3 (assuming you don't use 2 on the home PCS's)
(almost) all (to my knowledge) 'desktop' versions of the av products DO NOT count in the licensing for server access, they only count if they are part of the 'groupware' version.
so if i already had 5 mcafee virus scan on my desktops already I would have to throw them out and get 5 Active virus defense licenses + 1 for the server = 6.
If you have retail AV products, they (almost certainly) will not count towards server access licensing
The same is true of (most) 'desktop only' corporate versions.
Sophos are slightly different in that they license on machine count and % limit for servers (10 users = 1 server, 20 users = 2 servers etc..) although this may have changed..
AV branding and packages changes DAILY so it can be difficult to get a clear picture of what you can and cant do..
One option you do have if your desktop AV licenses are NOT retail, is to go to your chosen reseller and ask about 'competitive' upgrade. Almost all the vendors will give you (up to) 65% off the initial buy price to switch products. (sounds like buying car insurance..!!!)
Talk to some resellers and make them do the work for you and come back with some costs and license counts you would need. Then verify directly with the vendor that what the reseller is telling you on licensing counts is correct.

I need to install anti-virus on my SBS 2003 server. I only need one license
as all of my workstations (10) already have anti-virus software. What is my
best/cheapest option that I can put on my server. Also, I am planning on
setting up Exchange (i will post another question on that). Do I need
another anti-virus product on my server for that?? And will I need a license
for each mailbox? Thanks!
