Re: IIS configuration doubt

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Here is a KB article that describes the process http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833797 . Also this one http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829112 (the part using stsadm.exe is what you need if you decide to reinstall the server) and this one too http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827701/

If this is the first time you backup and restore a SharePoint application I would suggest you do some reading and a test restore first. Read this http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/WSS/en/library/2b6c533f-a033-4d1b-81a4-2ada2e4eab9a1033.mspx?mfr=true for more information

Hi Costas,

I don't have problems to access Companyweb.
What is the best way to back-it-up?

Regards,
José

You are welcome :)

If you try to access companyweb, what is the exact error you get? I'm thinking that if you get access to companyweb and back it up, you won't lose anything if you reinstall

Dear Costas,

Thank you very much for your answer.
I had the IIS services already running and the only production I had is the sharepoint website "companyweb" filled with information and files I don't want to loose.

Re-installing the IIS service was sugested by the system it self when I tried to see what was going on.

I will backup the system and then decide what to do.

Efharisto. ;)

Best regards,
José Eduardo

Jose,

Is this a new installation? You write that you had to reinstall IIS. In SBS, reinstalling IIS isn't a good idea since it integrates so many components together. If this is a new installation that hasn't gone into production yet, I would suggest a reinstall from scratch. It might take some time but it will save you the headaches trying to configure IIS.

The IIS files are under the 'inetpub' directory but the site definitions are stored in XML format (metadata), that can be backed up and restored by right-clicking the server name is IIS, and then selecting 'All Tasks | Backup/Restore configuration'.

There is an automatic backup that takes places throughout the day but this backup is being overridden with newer ones. My name is Greek by the way :)

Dear Costas,

Thank you for your answer.
Meanwhile I discovered that the "Default Web Site" is missing when trying to re-install IIS.
I was asked to perform a backup of the websites but then just recover the files and not the full website.... now I'm confused .... dah... and where is that stored - is it <Inetpub> folder?

Can you help me with this Costas? Your name sounds Pt am I right?

Best regards,
José Eduardo

Go to IIS Manager and then the 'Default Web Site' properties. Next to 'IP Address' is '(All Unassigned)' selected? If not, select it and then try accessing the site again.

If that doesn't solve the problem, click on the 'Advanced' button and make sure that under 'multiple identities for this web site' you have to entries. One should be at port 80 with host header the name of the server, and the other under 'IP address' should have '127.0.0.1' at port 80 with no host header entry.

I'm sorry to insist with this but I really need to solve the problem!

OS - SBS 2003 Premium

Problem - until yesterday I was able to access the server desktop remotely
[http://server/] - the default page would give me the chance to choose
several options:

1 - Remote Desktop Access
2 - Add Computer to the Network
3 - Access Internal Company website

I was using the Remote Desktop Access when I lost the connection and got an "Internal Error" message; I was checking some configurations on the IIS Administration.

I've tried to reconnect with no success.

Re-started the Server to try and get the system back to the original state. No luck!

Now when I try to access to the server using the browser - http://server/ I get "Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)

I don't know if by any chance I deleted something on the IIS.

It seems to me that the default website is missing! Right?

Can this be fixed with online newsgroup help?

If more details are needed please ask - just remember I'm not a system engineer - don't be too techie.

Thank you very much for your attention.
