RE: Service pack version

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that the SBS 2003 BPA suggests
you install SBS 2003 sp1 on your SBS. However, you had installed Windows
Server 2003 sp2 on your SBS. If I have misunderstood the problem, please
don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, I agree with you that the SP2 of Computer properties
means the Windows Server 2003 sp2, but not SBS 2003 sp2.

Now, you had installed Windows Server 2003 sp2 on your SBS, and the SBS
2003 BPA suggests you install the SBS 2003 sp1. I suggest we try the
following steps:

It is recommended to install the Windows Server 2003 sp2 after install the
SBS 2003 sp1. Since you had installed the Windows Server 2003 sp2 before
install the SBS 2003 sp1, we can also install the SBS 2003 sp1 after
installed Windows Server 2003 sp2.

On the SBS server, click Start, click Run, type "regedit" (without the
quotation marks) and click OK. Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer, and check the
data of the registry value ServicePackNumber. Is it set to "1"? If not,
that means the SBS 2003 SP1 has not been completely installed. To
successfully install SBS 2003 SP1, we must install all five updates listed
below. Additionally, the updates must be installed in the sequence listed.

b3fc3/ToDownLoadFilesandReadInstructions.htm

Note: If one or more of the listed components is already installed, you can
skip to the next step. You had installed Windows Server 2003 sp2 on SBS, so
please skip the step A# (install the Windows Server 2003 sp1).

A. Service Pack 1 for the Windows Server 2003 operating system
B. Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
C. Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
E. Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment
F. Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1

Note: Windows Server 2003 SP2 is independent of Windows Small Business
Server 2003 SP1 and of Windows Server 2003 SP1. Even if Windows Server 2003
SP2 has been applied to the server, Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1
can still be installed on the server, and you do not have to uninstall
Windows Server 2003 SP2.

After you applied the whole SBS 2003 SP1, please run CEICW.

Go through the follow KB and rerun CEICW carefully.

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| the server was quite a mess, only one item left:
| Running BPA results in recommending that I reinstall SP1.
| Computer properties says it is at SP2. I believe it means Windows 2003
| service pack 2 and the SBS is sp1.
| So does reinstalling SP1 going to over write all the patches applied
| since it was first installed?
| The system is finally running as it should be, and I do not feel like
| #%&@ing it up now.
| What's the right call?
