If you have EventID 12302 - It is definate that one or more VSS writers are
failing or something is making them to fail
Check the state of writers from command prompt using command mentioned below
vssadmin list writers
Find what writers are failing and work in that direction
Reregistring the related DLL's or updating them might do that job
Otherwise you may go ahead and reinstall COM+

Dave, as far as I know all updates were applied at least 3 months ago..
Funny thing, I went to run Windows Update and it appears to be stuck in some
sort of loop. The screen where it says checking for latest updates just
hangs on and on and never goes to the next screen. This has never happened
before I ran all of the updates before delivering the box. Investigating the
Windowsupdate.log file shows:

Another note, I tried to apply the VSS hotfix that you suggested but comes
back with a msg that says "The service pack version of the system is newer
than the update you are applying and there is no need to install."
Also something I never saw before, I am now getting VSS errors in the
application event log:
EventID 12302 - Volume Shadow Copy Service error: An internal inconsistency
was detected in trying to contact shadow copy service writers. Please check
to see that the Event Service and Volume Shadow Copy Service are operating
properly.
and also
EventID 8194 - Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying
for the IVssWriterCallback interface. hr = 0x8007000e.
Ugh this really looks like a big issue. Any more ideas? Any way to
re-install VSS or maybe Com+ ?
Thanks for any help from anyone, i am in dire need....I made a batch file
using xcopy and the AT scheduler to temporarily get backups. But i really
want this solved as it appears to be escalating.

A couple of ideas:
Make sure you are current on patches and service packs, at least through SBS
SP1. If you're on Windows Server SP2, that's fine as long as you've also
done the SBS-specific parts of SBS SP1. If not, I would not install SP2
while you're in the middle of this.
See this KB and consider trying the hotfix:
A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update-2 package is available
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=887827
This thread has a couple of posts that reference McAfee AV in case you're
using that: http://www.petri.co.il/forums/showthread.php?t=5708
If you manually start the Volume Shadow Copy service, does it start
normally, without logging any errors? By the way, the Exchange VSS writer
is disabled in SBS by default, so unless someone explicitly re-enabled it, I
doubt this is anything to do with Exchange (as you know from your attempt to
back up one file).

I have a new SBS 2003 box at a clients. I just installed this a few months
ago and everything was working great as far as the backup goes. I had SBS
backup going to tape and NTbackup running at a different time to 3
removeable
hard drives. Everything was dreamy.
All of a suddent, not sure when cause customer called 3 months later
saying
the backup is not running. After investigating and trying a manual NT
backup
of just one text file I get this message "Error returned while creating
the
volume shadow copy:0xffffffff" and the backup fails. I found an article
on
MS NG about re-registering some dll's
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940032/en-us This article did not fix my
issue. So i tried disabling shadow copy and the backup is still trying to
backup using shadow copy.
I am not really using exchange on this box yet but one day we will, I
would
like to know if anyone has a clue what to try next. When I try to list
the
vssadmin providers the list is blank, as well as the writers. I know this
was working a few months ago and I have spent hours on this, anyone with
any
ideas please help!!!
