It's also a media designed for short text messages on limited bandwidth
connections. It was made back when 9600 baud was FAST and colours didn't
exist. The way newsgroups work really haven't changed that much since. Only
real change was made to allow people to use languages other than English
(by switching to first 8 bit, and then 16 bit, from the original 7 bit).
There's a lot of kludges that have come around to make this media do things
it was never designed to do, but in the end, the only thing it was ever
meant to do is short text mesages. Anything over 100K means you didn't snip
enough.

Newsgroups are the direct descendent of 'teletype' or 'newswire' services.
Services which broadcast to a large number of 'subscribers'. Most of you
newbies miss this point.
