Re: Moto Q SBS Premium Active Sync Errors

HI Cris:

Yes... followed all the directions in the document

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sbs/2003/deploy/winm5.mspx
Deploying Windows Mobile 5.0 with Windows Small Business Server 2003

The cert is shown on the Q.

Thanks for the tip.

I'll give you all I know... long, but not very much info.

Windows Mobile 5 on Moto Q, Active Sync 4.5, SBS 2003 Premium, Exchange 2003
SP2 and ISA 2004, still on SP1.

When I first saw this setup the user already had Active Sync 4.5 on his Q
and was syncing all but Email with his desktop via USB. Now he wants email
over the air, as in "direct push". (or any other way?? )

Followed the directions (never was able to memorize all those screens) in:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sbs/2003/deploy/winm5.mspx
Deploying Windows Mobile 5.0 with Windows Small Business Server 2003

and at the very end, instead of syncing up the mail we got:

"the proxy server specified is incompatible with the device" Error Code
85010008

So no mail flows, and as a test the document recommends connecting to the
RWW site over the air with the Q. This results in a "user name or password
error". So we know it hits the server, but is being blocked. We know the
user name and password are correct, as we (temporarily) made the password
abcd. Hard to mistype that one, even on a Q.

Research turns up lots of threads and posts, but I have never seen a
satisfied customer. All threads seem to just end. The most promising one
is from CSS which recommends:

<snip>
This issue can be caused by an incorrect setting in ActiveSync. Please try
following steps and check if the issue persists:

1. On the workstation, open ActiveSync.
2. Choose Connection Settings from the File menu.
3. Change 'This computer is connected to:' to 'The Internet' from
'Automatic'
4. Click 'OK'.

If the issue persists after performing above steps, I would like to confirm
that is ISA server installed on the server?

We have seen some similar issue reports. The problem occurred because the
ISA firewall client picks up the ActiveSync connection requests and sends
them to the ISA server. Normally, the packages should be transferred to the
desktop computer local. The improper ISA firewall client action causes the
desktop ActiveSync connection issue.

To resolve the problem, please refer to following article:

http://blogs.technet.com/petergal/archive/2006/02/02/418663.aspx

If it does not work, you may also try the steps below:

1. Open ISA Management console. Navigate to Configuration\General. Click
'Define Firewall Client Settings' in the right panel. Click 'Application
Settings' tab.

2. Click 'New'. Input 'wcescomm' in Application box. Select 'Disable' as
key. Input 1 in value box. Click 'OK' to close the dialog box.

3. Refer to Step2, Create entries for 'wcesmgr' and 'repimgr'. With these
entries configured, the ISA firewall client will not pick up the ActiveSync
initiated packages.

4. Click 'OK' to close the dialog box. Apply the settings.

5. Reboot the client computer. Try the ActiveSync again. Will the issue be
resolved?

The root cause of the problem is that the ActiveSync 4.x emulates a network
connection when the device is connected. An 169.x.x.x IP address will be
bound to the network connection. The ISA firewall client treats the IP
address as external type and then picks up the traffic of ActiveSync
program.

If it still does not work, I suggest you try following steps:

Start -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Double click "connections"
Setup your proxy server under "Set up my proxy server"
Click on advance tab under connections
Click on "Select networks"
Click on "Exceptions"
Added your server's external FQDN.

<end snip>

Anyone know if that will do it? In that order, or some other way? Or
something else?

Thanks for your attention and assistance.
