can not reconnect computer to server

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

We have a network running SBS2003 with all Windows XP clients. One of the
laptops on our network was taken to another location and connected to another
network. Upon returning, the computer no longer connects with the server
without extra steps. When you try to open a directory on the server it will
show the directory but will show 0 items in the directory. If I logoff the
user and log back on I can connect to the server but only if I wait for the
computer to run through all startup processes.

To further clarify, if I restart the computer it will not connect to the
server. However, after logging off and then logging back on I am able to
connect to the server if I do not try to do so before all startup process
have completed.

Can someone help me understand what is going on here? Thank you for your help.
