I have been 10 years in the IT field. In the beginning, I worked VERY hard
getting certified. First a full CNE (in both 3.x and 4) and then MCSE in
both NT and 2k. However, looking back I can't say that it really helped me
all that much. It seems employers look more at your experience and what you
have succesfully done.

I think the most that certification will do for you in the job search is it
"may" get you past the first hurdle. For example if an employer advertises a
position and receives 100 resumes on his desk, he may first try to narrow
things down by throwing out all that don't have the certification--leaving
about 20 or so for the next stage of consideration. But most of the time
they look at the experience of the various candidates. Most corporate HR
people don't have a clue what MCSE means, it seems.

I have yet to meet someone in a top level job in the IT field, who can tell
me that they received their job solely because they had cert initials after
their name.
