You not the first person telling me that - maybe because i'm someone to the
point and precise also. Anyway, i guess the practise part is important.

Craig you are making this too hard. Just create the raid with the
controller, reboot on the SBS CD1, press F6, feed it the drivers, create a
30 to 50 GB partition for your SBS, and install the first CD. When that
is done, create the rest of the partitions and install the hardware
drivers from the mobo cd or a fresh download.
The 2 drives on which you create RAID1, or the 3 or more drives on which
you create RAID5 will appear to the OS as one huge physical drive that you
can partition just as if there was only 1 physical drive in the system.
If you want to practice this, install SBS on a single drive attached to
the onboard controller, or create and break the RAID x as many times as
you like until you feel comfortable.

Hi Larry
Based on the following -
"Once the first partition is created with the install process, allow the
first CD to do its magic, and stop the installation when it has
finished. Then use Disk Management to create the rest of the desired
partitions, and install the drivers for your system..."
I understand that i must create 1 partition and install Windows on there.
Then only when Windows is installed use Disk Management to create the
rest of the partitions where raid must be on. Don't know why but it
doesn't sound right to me or i don't understand it. Should i do raid
before any Windows installation(s) start off?

Hi Craig:
In addition to what David said, it is not likely that step 6 about
inserting a driver CD will work. You will want to create a floppy disk
from the CD furnished by the controller mfg, or create a slip streamed
version of CD1 that contains the driver. If you plan to practice this
installation many times, you may find the latter to be faster in the
long run.
Once the first partition is created with the install process, allow the
first CD to do its magic, and stop the installation when it has
finished. Then use Disk Management to create the rest of the desired
partitions, and install the drivers for your system
If you have not seen them already, look at www.sbs-rocks.com or
www.sbsrules.com for a walkthrough on the process.

Once you have setup the raid on the card and you have installed the
drivers for it during the windows install it will act as a single
drive. You can then partition it off however you see fit. Because you
are using hardware raid then you can install the os on it.

Hi everyone
Firstly, thank you very much for the help so far. I will need to do
RAID 5 on a server this weekend and i have never done it before.
Anyone so kind to help me with step by step instructions on how to do
it. I will be doing a hardware RAID as software seems to be confusing
and problematic. I found some instructions on the web ....
Steps for Hardware Raid
1. Install RAID controller card into PC (i assume i just physical plug
the card in)
2. Connect drives (min 3 for Raid5) to controller card (assume i
connect my scsi drives to the card)
3. Power on PC : be alert !
4. A prompt will be displayed.. something like "Press Ctl-A to
configure RAID array" (i need to be on alert for the key to press to
enter the RAID setup)
4.1 Configure a RAID array using the cards bios. Read the manual for
your particular card (don't understand this - will the manual guide me
here?)
4.2 Give array a name like "RAID array1" so you can find it in windows
later. (understandable)
4.3 Save configuraton. PC will reboot.
5. Boot from OS CD. (understandable)
5.1 Prompt will come up saying press F6 if you need to install
hardware drivers. YES you do....
6. Insert CD/Floppy with RAID controller drivers (so here i will take
out the OS cd and put in the cd with the RAID drivers on)
7. OS setup will now continue and you will have the opportunity to
select the RAID array as the location for install....
Also read i cannot install OS on the RAID. it will need to be on a
separate partition. So how will i do this.So will i need to create 2 or
how many partitions or does the RAID setup take care of that also.
Please let me know if this is step by step instructions and if i will
be able to install the OS successfully after this.
Craig
