RE: Unable to authenticate via SMTP to SBS2003

Hello Matthew,

Thank you for posting here.

From your post, I understand that when attempting to send emails to remote
users by using Outlook Express, an authentication issue is encountered.

Firstly, I suggest you confirm following settings:

Step 1:
==========
1. Open Exchange System Manager.
2. Expand DomainName/Servers/ServerName/Protocols/SMTP/
3. Right click Default SMTP Virtual Server and click properties.
4. Click Access tab, ensure only following options are checked:

Anonymous access
Basic authentication
Integrated Windows Authentication

5. Click Users button, and grant Relay Permission to Authenticated Users.
6. In Access tab, ensure no Certificate is installed.(Communication button
is greyed out)
7. Click Relay button, if it is possible, add the IP address of the machine
to the list to grant relay emails.
8. Click Delivery tab, click Outbound Security button.
9. Please ensure to choose Anonymous access.

Step 2:
=====
In Outlook Express, open the Properties window of the mail account and then
refer to following article to configure the accounts:

How to Configure a POP3 Client Computer to Use Exchange as the SMTP Server
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996647(EXCHG.65).aspx

How to Configure Authentication on a POP3 Client Computer's Outgoing Mail
Server
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124981(EXCHG.65).aspx

If it still does not work, I suggest you do not choose 'Use same settings
as my incoming mail server' and manually input the credential. Please also
try domain\username as the account name.

I hope the above information is helpful to you. If the problem still
occurs, please help me gather following information:

1. Does the issue happen on all the clients?
2. Does the issue happen for all the user accounts?

3. Please enable SMTP log first, reproduce the issue, then send the log to
v-mzhuan@xxxxxxxxxxxxx:

NOTE: Please let me know the recipient's email address and the sender's
email address.

a. Open Exchange System Manager. Navigate to
Servers\ServerName\Protocols\SMTP\Default SMTP virtual server. Right-click
it and choose 'Properties'.

b. In General tab, check 'Enable logging' option. Click 'Properties'
button, enable *ALL* logging options in 'Advanced' tab.

c. Click 'OK' to close the dialog box. Restart the SMTP virtual server.

d. Reproduce the problem (send e-mail through external account). Wait for
10~20 minutes.

e. Go back to the server. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to
%systemroot%\system32\logfiles\smtpsvc1\ Gather the log file and send it to
me.

4. Open ESM, on the General tab in the server's Properties dialog box,
select the Enable message tracking check box. After the issue is
reproduced, please wait about 15 minutes and then go to the message
tracking folder and collect the message tracking log for me.

By default, the message tracking logs locate under the folder: C:\Program
Files\Exchsrvr\YourServerName.log

5. Please download the MPS Report tool from the following link and run it
on the SBS server, then send the generated CAB file to my mailbox
v-mzhuan@xxxxxxxxxxxxx for further investigation so that we can find what
the root cause is:

Please try the above steps at your earliest convenience. If you have any
concern, please feel free to let me know.

Best regards,

|
| I'm having some trouble with a Small Business Server 2003. We've got
| about 10 users, all of whom have Exchange email accounts. These users
| can connect to their Exchange email just fine through Outlook or
| Outlook Webaccess, send and receive email, create appointments, and so
| forth. Right now I'm trying to get it configured so other devices,
| such as PDAs, can send and receive email via POP3/IMAP and SMTP. I
| got the receiving down by first going into the Windows services and
| enabling Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 and Microsoft Exchange POP3 followed
| by going into Server Manager and enabling the Default IMAP4 server and
| Default POP3 server. I was then able to download email via Outlook
| Express from one of the Exchange mailboxes.
|
| However, when I tried to send an email to a remote users (such as my
| personal Hotmail account) Outlook Express sat at "authenticating" for
| about 5-10 seconds during send/receive before it popped up a window
| asking for my user name and password. This surprised me as I had
| checked the box in OE that my outbound email server requires
| authentication and to use the same credentials as my inbound email.
| After a few tries it finally gives up with the following error:
|
| Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible
| causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long
| period of inactivity. Account: 'mail.example.com', Server:
| 'mail.example.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error
| Number: 0x800CCC0F
|
| If I try sending an email from one Exchange user to another Exchange
| user it goes right through without prompting me for authentication.
|
| I've done some searching and some pointed to IIS bandwidth throttling
| ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278637 ). I checked all the web
| sites in IIS Manager and none have that box checked. Do I need to
| specify a different combination for username in OE such as username
| \domain or username@xxxxxxxxxx? I confirmed the Exchange server is
| configured to block relaying ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324958
| ). What am I missing?
|
| Thanks!
|
