Re: Accessing PCs that connect to SBS server 2003 via VPN

While I think that installing "software' over a VPN connection may be an
exercise in frustration due to the overhead and nature of a VPN, I don't see
how you will be able to "share" or gain access to their VPN session. For IT
administration, you usually need to take control of a computer and then do
the software installations/updates under an account with sufficient local
admin privileges.

To that end, a different approach may be to install Logmein Free Edition
(www.logmein.com) on the remote machine, then set up a special (remote)
admin account with local administrator permissions on that remote machine.
Then set up a time when the remote can give you access to the machine, log
in and do the software installations. You could then establish a VPN back
to the SBS server for software installations/updates.

The assumption here is that the remote machines are XP Pro or Vista
Business/Ultimate. I'm also assuming that the remote machines have
broadband Internet access. In addition, I assume that you don't need to
update the actual user profile on the remote machine with your
installations/updates, where you would need to log in under their account
credentials on the remote machine.

We have set up VPN access on our SBS 2003 box for our remote users which
works fine. The problem I have is that, when they are connected I cannot
ping
them or connect to them for admin purposes. (Install software etc) Their
VPN
connection shows up in DCHP with RAS under the Unique ID column instead
of
the remote PC mac code and the servername in the name column instead of
the
device name.
Can anyone tell me how to resolve this?
