On the downside, is there a more expensive AV package than Sophos? :(At least we do not bash Sophos, which is an achievement of it's own...
Honestly, I never used it but heard good things about it. TM became my
favorite when realized it is using the good old Apache server.
When it comes to protection, based on reviews, Symantec is always in the
top 5, and has protected my networks for many years, without fail, never
having a compromised network that we manage in 20+ years.... Yes, I've
had customers with personal computers that were compromised, but not any
of their business networks.
I downloaded the latest Symantec EPP that includes the MR, installed the
AV and Proactive parts on 5 workstations, unmanaged mode, not the
firewall part - on 2 workstations it would not complete the Firewall
Live Update part (even though I didn't install it) and would just hang
(waited 20 minutes), so I uninstalled it and tried again, several times,
same result.
I also downloaded Symantec Corp 10.2 which includes 10.1.6 for XP and
2003 servers and it installed on those same machines that EPP would not
complete on, worked fine.
When I installed 10.2 (as 10.1.5) on Server 2003, SBS 2003, XP, I had
massive problems with roaming profiles and disconnected drives. I have
not installed 10.1.6 on any production system and I'm very leary of even
trying it, but 10.1.6 seems to be stable and I'll test over the next
couple weeks.
As for Sophos - nope, not going that route. Same for Trend, as they've
had the same quality issues as Symantec, several times. I'm not a
believer in AVG, since I've seen many Sorority systems compromised while
using it, completely updated, but I've been testing the personal version
on about 60 workstations in a domain that also has Symantec 10.0.x
running and there appear to be no issues with those workstations. We
also have one client that a vendor shipped AVG Server on, and other than
the dang thing updates when you login, then runs a scan, which impacts
server performance, it does not seem to cause any other problems.
While I said I would not continue to use Symantec Corp, I think I'm
going to stick with it, not EPP, but 10.2 and 10.1.6MR6 and see what
shakes out.
