Assuming you have the same issue on a different set of wires.
Since you don't get to see this server often, check that no "firewall"
application is running, particularly Norton's or McAfee. Never know what
end users can get up to.
NIC disabled? New NIC drivers?
2 NICS? Switch the IP's and retest? I had this happen to me once. Never
did figure out why or what was up with that. (use the wiz for the internal,
re run the CEICW)
Install a new one and test that. Can be a different set of IP's until you
get it sorted. If you need to install a new nic here is a recipe: from Les
and Charlie:
<snip>
Here's what Charlie Russel does:
Follow this procedure.
1.) disconnect from all networks by pulling the plug(s)
2.) disable the old NICs. If they're built in, disable them in Device
Manager as well.
3.) shutdown
4.) remove the NICs, if you can, or disable them in the BIOS if they're
built in.
5.) Insert the new Intel NICs.
6.) Power Up. Long Startup since SBS will miss its NICS.
7.) log in. It'll probably complain, but should let you in to the 500
account. If not, do safe mode.
8.) Let Windows find the new NICs
9.) Assign fixed IP address(s) to the NIC(s)
10.) Run the CEICW.
11.) Reboot.
Should be back to normal.
I prefer to power down, install new nic(s), power up and detect.
Disable old nic(s), transfer settings to new.
Run CEICW.
This avoids the usual very lengthy restart when things can't bind to the
NICs.
Disabling the on-board nics in BIOS is optional, but does prevent
accidentally enabling them from the OS later.

He said that someone else who was working on his system indicated some
type
of data corruption error when running chkdsk (at least that's what he
thought). So, I ran chkdsk to try to figure out what was going on.
DNS errors 4015 and 4004 appear to have been occuring off and on for
several
months (yesterday was the first time they've contracted me to do anything
in
several years, so I don't know much about recent history). Other than
those
two errors, nothing seems to have been happening prior to yesterday.

Hi James:
I wonder if the original complaint by the end user may give a clue.
Do you know what it was that caused him to suspect a problem?
Any errors in the event logs from either before the restart/chkdsk or
after?

Yesterday, a client told me he thought there was some type of file
corruption
on his SBS 2003 server, so I did a chkdsk at startup- pretty routine.
However, since that chkdsk, the server has been totally offline. The
clients can see/access/ping each other but can't get to the server and
the
server can't ping any clients. There were absolutely no changes to the
network setup; the chkdsk was the only thing I did.
After that, I tried redoing the IP stack, then doing a repair install
of
Windows. No luck there. I also tried switching the IP address,
checking
different cables, ports, etc. No luck.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
