Re: Erratic low disk space

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi,

I am assuming server is alerting to 'low disk' space... so you should have a
time this is happening? Sorry if its in the early hours...lol

As Al mentioned, a cool program..
http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml , run this and take a
screenshot of the system. Run it again when the alert happens or
periodically and you can see which folder is increasing in space.

Windows updates can take alot of space ( as many other issues but you both
seem to be on top of this), show hidden / os files and see if many
'uninstall' folders available to delete?

SBS does record many logs... do you need the logs, or have the retention
period for so long ?

Just some ideas to get started.

Hi,

I too have been experiencing this problem. Here we have SBS2003 SP1 also.
I
have a 12GB drive and usually had 1.2GB - 1.5GB free and had disk space
reduce to 400MB - 500MB. However, for the past few days the max space I
get
is around 800MB/900MB. I have increased/maintained disk space for the
moment
by removing various log files and other files not needed on the system.
Shadow copy has been disabled for a while bcause of this issue.

No doubt that during our Veritas's nightly backup disk space reduces.
Backups are full backups on an external usb hard disk.

Still looking into it but if anyone has any more thoughts let us know...
In the mean time, however, we still seem to be losing disk space
gradually.

Much appreciated.

Hi,
Recently I have been receiving low disk space warnings for my C: drive
(running SBS2003 SP1), with less than 5% available ( < 500MB). My C:
is only 16GB, but in the last year or so, has consistently had
approximately 1500MB free space available. In the last week or two,
on an almost daily basis, the free disk space on C drops down to 500MB
and then back to 1500MB after a day.

I have scrutinized physical file and folder sizes, and find nothing
unusual. No large log files or database data files, etc. All
programs (except SBS OS, Exchange, etc, and Veritas) run on a
different drive. Database files for Monitoring, Exchange, etc are
under 1GB. I have disabled indexing for search. Services running
show nothing unusual. I've run a full anti-virus scan (Trendmicro)
and no virus detected.

The only changes I have made in the last few weeks to the server is
adding an external USB drive for weekly full backups and adding a new
job to Veritas for that.

I'd much appreciate any advice or suggestions what else to check to
determine where the 1GB disk space is going, and how to alleviate this
low disk problem. I have already gone thru the Microsoft document
showing how to free up space by relocating database files (Exchange,
Monitoring, shared folders, etc.). As I mentioned though, those
databases are not that large and have not changed much over the past
few months.

Thank you for your help.

Greg B.
