Re: Failed update, no emails, no remote web access

In case you notice other issues later (VPN or Outlook over HTTP not working,
missing interfaces etc) have a look at this..

Larry, SuperGumby,
I tried "shutdown /i", did not work.
So I eventually did "pull the plug", recycled the server and...everything
back to normal, with now SP2 installed ! (relief...)
The only thing that did not work immediately was our SQL Server (refused
to
launch) , but this is only (as I eventually found out) because my domain
password had changed since we last configured SQL -- and apparently there
is
no procedure for automatically updating SQL passwords (additional security
I
suppose).
Anyway, problem solved.
Many many thanks for your assistance Larry and SuperGumby, truly useful.

Try accessing the logs. If you have another PC to connect to do so as
admin
then try remote manage SBS.

If remote management fails try to reboot the SBS by 'shutdown /i' from
XP/2003/Vista (assuming you can connect to something on the network).

As much as possible try to get it to restart through software, if all
else
fails 'pull the plug'. :-)

Hi Charles:

After doing a non vulcan mind-meld with your server, I still have no
idea
of what state it will be in after it finishes whatever it is doing.
Seems
it is concentrating so hard on the task at hand that I can't get any
info
from it.

Best bet if you are concerned about Monday, and if it does not involve
a
long drive to the office, might be to go have a look later today or
tomorrow if it does not come back for remote access and functionality.

Many thanks for your reply Larry
I was not aware that SP2 was out. Yes, that could explain it.
This is the weekend so we can wait in terms of production. But do you
thing
I should just wait for the next updates (tonight I suppose) and let
the
server cure itself? Right now it is still stuck trying to shut down. I
guess
I should at least shut it down manually on Monday morning, right? Do
you
think we will have full fonctionality back, then?

Hi Charles:

If that update is Windows Service Pack 2 you may just wait another
hour
or
so and see if the server recycles itself.

If it is SP2 you have a couple of additional patches to apply,

It might recover on its own, it might not. If you can't reasonably
wait,
due to time constraints, then a trip to the office might not be a bad
idea,
depending on if it involves foot, bicycle, auto, train, or airplane
mode
of
transportation. :-)

Hi all,

We have SBS 2003 standard behind a Sonicwall TZ 180. Everything
fine
untill
this morning.
Since this morning, we have no more remote web access, emails are
not
coming
in and our WM6 devices don't connect. We still have VPN
connectibity,
which
is how I was able to 1) check my outlook inbox, testing emails and
seeing
that I did not ge any ; 2) check out that the IIS service was off
and
that
I
could not restart it manually; 3) successfully rerun the remote
access
wizard
-- to no avail though as the situation contuned unchanged; 4)
finally,
in
desperation, attempt to remotely reboot the server.

The reboot did not work. The server has been stuck for more than an
hour
now
with the message (translated from French): "Don't turn off your
computer,
it
will be turned off automatically - Update being installed (1 of
1)".
We
still
have VPN access.

So I strongly suspect that all this is related to an update that
has
somehow
gone wrong.
Should I go to the office and turn off the power manually? I have
to
say I
have no idea how to proceed next.

Any help greatly appreciated !

Charles
