A note of caution on the DIR 655 - I used those at 2 sites and both failed
in about 6 months :-(. The symptoms were both the same, short but frequent
internet connection drops under load - resets didn't have any effect. It
wasn't ISP related, as one was on DSL and the other cable.
I replaced them with Sonicwall TZ 150W's. I've been slowly replacing all
existing routers with either 150's or 170's, and going with them right off
the hop with new installs, they've been rock solid so far (longest being in
for about 18 months).
The only caveat with the Sonicwalls is the licensing. They come with 10
connections, which is fine for 2-NIC SBS networks or where there are up to
10 connected computers on single-nic SBS. Beyond that, you have to buy more.
That part sucks a bit.
Interesting - thanks for that feedback, Les. I have not had this problem
with mine (in use >1 year), but it has not been under heavy load. Also,
I don't use mine as a router. It's been reconfigured as a WAP with a D-
Link DFL-200 acting as the router/firewall. That should reduce the load
on the 655's processor.
What firmware level are they using? Mine is at 1.05. I see D-Link has
1.11 available for download. Version 1.10 shows one fix as "Improved
LAN performance" - wonder what that means? I'll have to download the
latest and try it ...
