Re: Cannot install device drivers (Cannot find the file specifed)

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

When did this start? Did you make any changes to the server? In a lot of
cases where this happens it is a permission problem where the installer
can't read/write a folder. I would also search for a log file.

Error 2 only means that the OS couldn't find the file. It doesn't tell us
anything specific. Did you check the event logs for further clues?

Help!

My installation of SBS2003 SP2 will not install device drivers. I get
"Driver Install Fail. Error 2 - Cannot find the file specified"

I have manually copied the (inf, cat, & sys) files to the
system32\drivers directory and tried a driver install no help.
Anti-Virus software has been removed - no help.
the setupapi.log file reports this error. This seems to occur on any
device I try to perform a driver update/install. this problem seems
very similar to another post on this group dated Jan 28 (I can't
install anything).

This symptom is the same for signed and unsigned drivers.

Yeah, the big question is why it can't find the file it should be able
to find the file. It actually copies the *.sys file and then reports
that it can't find it. The installer can't find any file for any
device attempted to be installed - even the default driver files
located in system32/drivers directory. If I try to change any driver
for any device on the system the result is a null driver installed and
then an error code 28 (drivers are not installed for this device). If
I leave the original driver file in place and reboot, the system will
reload the old driver on boot up.

Nothing in the event logs.

Thanks,
Chris
