Hi All,
I'm about to process the migration from old server to new server
The reason for that, there has been a video card issue and the server
configuration may not be enough for the new FileMaker 9 server and
also want to use the old server for just a stand alone in a different
domain.
I have been reading about the posts in this group and following the
"Swing IT" from Jeff's site and it looks very good and I'm most likely
going that way to do this migration. However I have some question
regarding the current setup and the new setup differences.
Here is a summary;
what we have on server
windows SBS 2003 SP2
Symantec Corp, 10.0.2 expires on May 9th.
File Maker 7 - (version 9 upgrade is coming will be installed on new
server)
20 users (10 CALs and its installed per computer, we have part time
people working at office, using the same computers)
Outlook pst files are on server, pst files are not big, (like 100mb or
max 250 mb) Network Balancing is not an issue
File sharing
Current configuration, PentiumD 2.8, 1.5 GB DDR400 ECC, 2x320 SATA non-
Raid, slight Video card problem
-- HDD configuration; C-50GB HD1 for OS, D-320GB HD2 for SBS backups
and Shares, E-250GB HD1 for some other shares (we had a little issue
with one of the 80GBs came with Dell, and there was no warranty I
Ghost them to 320GBs)
(disk(0)part(1)125MB EISA Dell partition
(disk(0)part(2)16GB in use, 32 GB free
(disk(0)part(3)15GB in use, 235GB free
(disk(1)part(1)132GB in use, 165GB free
New server Setup
Xeon 3040 1.83, 2x1GB ddr2 667 ECC, 2x250 GB Raid1
-- HDD configuration, what I want, 50GB for OS, and rest for the data
storage.
what we dont have on server
No Exchange server running (pop3 smtp setup through hosting)
No SQL server needed, but running for SBS
No Raid setup (new server has it)
what i need to move over
File server info, Shares(lots of them)
User setups, and configuration.
Symantec License
SBS 2003 10 user license (New server has SBS 2003 R2 Standard Ed.
installed)
HDD and partition configurations change.
So, my questions are;
- Would hdd/partition configuration will be a problem? If so what do
you think I should do about the hdd/partition system?
- How would I move the SBS license? I know the phone support from MS,
but just want to make sure about it.
- I want to setup roaming profile on the server, should I be doing it
after the migration or before? Also, could PST files be a problem, as
some people says dont do keep them on the server, for a network
balancing, but thats not a big issue.
- Should I let Dell to install the system and i'll do the rest or
should I be installing it? (I just want to save some time)
Thanks for your time to read this long post, I appreciate any
suggestion you may have.
For your solution just make one large RAID-5 Partition, "C" and install
everything on it, it will save you lots of headache later and you're not
any more/less secure with a single partition. Get 4 drives, one acts as
a hot spare, or get 4 drives and use all 4 active, then order a spare to
sit on the shelf in case you have a failure.
You want 4GB RAM no matter what, don't even consider less.
Get Dual CPU's, go with slower if you need to keep the cost down, but
get Dual CPU's, if you grow later or run backups during production
hours, you will kick yourself for not doing it now - it's not that much
more expensive to do it now.
New server will have Exchanged, leave it on it and make use of it, your
hosted email can be a backup.
SQL, like it or not, you will have a version/flavor of SQL on the server
for SBS functions.
You want 4GB RAM.
How are you going to backup the server?
Roaming profiles - I use them on MANY servers and also implement
redirected My Documents folder also - no problem.
No matter what Dell ships you, it will be configured incorrectly, blow
it away and start from scratch. This will let you setup the way YOU WANT
IT.
