the thread that caused this bounce-back is one that has been used
regularly by customer prior to implementing SBS 2k3 r2 exchange

In addition, the end-users are now receiving a lot of spam that they did
not receive when email was hosted by Verio.

any articles, guidance, suggestions greatly appreciated.

Absolutely. I always create a mailbox folder called

_Username's Saved Items

(the underscore making sure it will always be at the top).

Thanks Lanwench,

You mention .."open the PST" ...how..with what program????please
keep in mind that the end-user is already using an exchange
mailbox....in Outlook
Then how do I copy/paste ..into where?

thanks

Interesting - I just wrote this elsewhere, twice today, in this same
group!

Open the PST file in the same profile as the mailbox once you've got
the mailbox open (use file | open | outlook data file)
Expand it
Select the contents of the built-in folders (ctrl+a) and copy them
(edit | copy to folder) to the appropriate folders.
[For calendars, change the view to "by category" to get an easier
table view so you can do the copy.]
For custom folders, select the folder itself & then use edit | copy
to folder (and choose the root of the mailbox, or wherever).

Then right-click on the PST file and close it and never ever use PSTs
again if you value your sanity & the smooth maintenance of your
network. Disable autoarchive to PST too for all users. PST=BAD.

TO All:

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR CONSISTENT, TENACIOUS, AND COMPETENT
HELP.
Things are looking up....Cablevision(Optimum Online Business) was
blocking port 25....I had them open it up and bada bing we got
email queues emptying to the internet.

Glad to hear it. And I see you now have *two* MX records - you
should have the secondary one (preference 75) removed unless this
is a server doing store&forward for you (which I doubt).

75 mail-fwd.mx.g19.rapidsite.net. [TTL=86400] IP=199.239.254.18
[TTL=14] [US]
50 aiserver01.ambertube.com. [TTL=86400] IP=96.56.26.250
[TTL=86400] [US]

Verio zone file had some errors that have now been corrected and
are propogating throughout the internet.

I'd move the DNS away from them to something you can control
yourself. I use DynDNS (their CustomDNS service is very nice). It's
worth it.

I am now working on importing the end-users PST's into
exchange...One user has multiple huge PST's and the import keeps
failing.

Ah. It's best to avoid importing in Outlook. You may end up with
corrupt data. Instead, open the PST, select what you want & edit |
copy to folder. That's the best way.

Also - make sure your mailbox quotas will permit this user to get
all his old mail in. Perhaps he really doesn't need all of this in
his mailbox. And remind him that "want != need". :-)

Also want to implement RWW so users can access their own desktops
remotely..any suggestions/help greatly appreciated

It's implemented already, if you joined everyone to the domain
using the wizards and all that. You just need to open up the ports
in your firewall (443 for RWW/OWA and 4125 for RD)

Thanks Again for GREAT help so far

Hmmm. I don't see any of the records you mention. Are you sure
it's ambertube.com? If so, your domain's sole MX record is

75 mail-fwd.mx.g19.rapidsite.net. [TTL=86400] IP=199.239.254.18
[TTL=233] [US]

What's that? If you want to host your own mail, you'll need to
set up your MX record(s) properly to point at your server via A
records that point at your own network's public IP.

sorry

No problem :-)

recently installed a new Dell Poweredge 840 with SBS2003 R2
standard. System is dual NIC with Cisco router that is wide
open.(passing all traffic through to the external public NIC.

email was formerly handled by the company's webhost(VERIO).

I accessed the Verio control panel and added an "A" record
that points to the public IP of the external NIC.

I also added a "MX" record for XXSERVER01.domainname.com.

the new MX is in 1st position and the former mail servers have
been moved to 2nd position in priority

When I ping XXSERVER01.domainnmae.com the PING returns the
proper Public IP address of the SBS server.

PROBLEM:

no exchange email is comming in or out.

H E L P!!! as it is 15 hours since the zone changes and still
no email flows in or out.

TIA

Please don't mask your domain names and IP addresses when you
post - it makes it very difficult for us to help you.
