Sorry for getting back into the conversation so late. I've been out of the
office all day.
I was thinking that if the DB were Access based, you could publish an FTP
server on the SBS via ISA and lock it down to a very narrow ip range where
the PIII machines live. (Outside of the DHCP scope of the wireless router
where the PIII machines could have static IP assignments.) This could give
them access to the .xls and access database without requiring any LAN
credentials. Someone would need to make sure that files on one of the PIII
machines would be synchronized with those on the server's FTP share.
Something like sync toy would work.
In the same way, when the database goes to SQL, you could publish the SQL
server to the same PIII ip range thus giving them access to the back end.

I'd give them locked-down user accounts (unless there's a better way).
And the database is Access-based now, but will go to SQL in the
near-future.

Mike,
If I understand what you're saying, the PIII systems will connect to the
guest wireless which is on the outside of the SBS network. So from the
LAN side point of view, those PIII systems would be coming in from the
internet.
Do you want to give the students user accounts so that they can access
LAN resources? (Needed for RWW or VPN options)
Is the database forms they input to connected to the SQL server? (Is the
database server based like SQL server, or file based like Access)
Knowing the answer to those questions would determine the best path to
take.

Running SBS 2003 Premium, Exchange, ISA 2004, SQL, 2 NIC's, router,
L2/L3 switch, WSUS.
==================
I am setting up a separate network for Guest access using a wireless
router with a fixed IP conected to the T1 Cisco router. My access
points are in near-by buildings and connectivity is good. Our lab is
busy from Spring to early Fall with undergraduate and graduate students,
and a part of their duties is to input data into Excel sheets and
database forms. I put a couple old PIII's out there with wireless cards
and would like to give them access to the LAN so they can get to those
resources. Money is tight, otherwise I'd set up another wireless
network. Can I use VPN in this scenario? (I've never used it or seen
it in use.) The setup seems pretty simple. We are in a remote rural
area so I'm not worried about anyone else getting in. I'm pretty sure I
can lock the users down with folder/file permissions so they can't stray
where they shouldn't. (GP is probably better, but that's another area
I've never gotten into.)
Any and all suggestions and comments are welcome!
