Hello Brian,
Thank you for posting here.
According to your description, I understand that you get error "The Recycle
Bin on \\SERVERNAME\Users\username\My Documents\My pictiures is corrupted.
Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive?" when you join Vista
clients to SBS domain. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't
hesitate to let me know.
Based on my research, I think this issue caused by you did not install SBS
2003 sp1 on SBS. I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:
1. Verify the SBS 2003 sp1 is installed on SBS:
On the SBS server, click Start, click Run, type "regedit" (without the
quotation marks) and click OK. Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer, and check the
data of the registry value ServicePackNumber. Is it set to "1"? If not,
then this problem will occur because SBS 2003 SP1 has not been completely
installed. To successfully install SBS 2003 SP1, we must install all five
updates listed below. Additionally, the updates must be installed in the
sequence listed.
Downloading and Installing Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1
http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/0/f/e0fee8ce-768d-41c0-8871-9bc48e0
b3fc3/ToDownLoadFilesandReadInstructions.htm
Note: If one or more of the listed components is already installed, you can
skip to the next step.
A. Service Pack 1 for the Windows Server 2003 operating system
B. Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
C. Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
E. Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment
F. Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1
Note: Windows Server 2003 SP2 is independent of Windows Small Business
Server 2003 SP1 and of Windows Server 2003 SP1. Even if Windows Server 2003
SP2 has been applied to the server, Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1
can still be installed on the server, and you do not have to uninstall
Windows Server 2003 SP2.
After you applied the whole SBS 2003 SP1, please run CEICW.
2. After install the SBS 2003 sp1, please download and install Windows 2003
sp2 (or again) to the SBS 2003:
Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (32-bit x86)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=95ac1610-c232-4644-
b828-c55eec605d55&DisplayLang=en
Note: We need to install some hotfixes on SBS 2003 server after installing
Windows 2003 SP2. Please refer to following article for more information:
Best practices and known issues when you install Windows Server 2003
Service Pack 2 on a Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939421
3. Ensure you had installed the following hotfix on SBS 2003:
Windows Small Business Server 2003: Windows Vista and Outlook 2007
compatibility update
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=926505
4. Ensure you join the Vista client to SBS domain thru connectcomputer
wizard. To do so: On the Vista client, access
http://SBSname/connectcomputer/, and finish the wizard.
5. Reset the Security Permission on Recycle Bin to Default:
a. Please open Computer on Vista, click Organize button at the left top
b. Select Folder and Search Options
c. Select View tab, uncheck "Hide protected operation system files" option,
click OK
d. Locate on C:\, right click $Recycle.Bin folder, select properties
e. Select Security tab, ensure SYSTEM and Administrators groups in the
list, and all have Full control permission.
f. Click OK
Then, test this issue.
If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:
1. Does this issue happen on all Vista clients or individual Vista client?
2. Please capture screenshots on the error messages and send the pictures
to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
3. Do you get any related event error on the Vista client?
4. Gather MPS network report on SBS:
a. Download MPSrepot_network from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE
b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe.
c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
take 10~15 minutes.
d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\
e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
I hope these steps will give you some help.
Thanks and have a nice day!
Best regards,
Terence Liu(MSFT)

| I have a user to dropped their windows xp laptop last week, so got a
| brand new vista one today. This new Vista laptop is a member of the
| domain. My domain has group policy re-directing each users my
| documents and desktop back to the sbs server. When this user logs in,
| it shows an error saying: "The recycle bin on \\servername\users
| \username\my documents\my pictures is corrupted. Do you want to emply
| the Recycle Bin for this device?" If you hit No, it then errors again,
| saying the bin on my documents is corrupted. I've searched around and
| have yet to find anything that really helps. I've tried deleting the
| user and re-creating them, but unless they log into a XP machine
| first, it does not do my folder re-direction. Any help is appreciated.
