Re: Email attachments fom one user can not be opened on SBS server

Hi,

I would try logging in with another user account on the PC and then try, this might tell you if there is something corrupt in the current config. Besides that sorry I have no idea. Symantec involved anywhere is always a problem and I try and get my customers to avoid any of their products like the plague.

I'm working with Joe on this problem as well. In response to Larry's question, it does not matter if the file is saved to the receiving computer first or opened directly from the email, we get the same results.

And yes, exorcism is rapidly moving to the top of the options list :)

Some of this information is redundant, but this is the post that I just put on the Partner forums. As Joe said, any help is greatly appreciated

* Attachments from other users outside of the office come through fine. The problem only seems to be affecting this one particular user as far as we can tell.

*The problem only seems to happen if she sends from Outlook or Outlook Express. If she logs into the ISP’s webmail client from the same computer and sends the exact same attachment to the same address inside the office, it works fine.

*If the email is opened from the office’s ISP before it POPs to Exchange, it will open fine at the office, which seems to eliminate a problem with the office’s ISP.

*Attachments sent from the same user to other addresses open fine in most situations. We had her send emails to test addresses at other customer sites and they seemed to open okay except at one other location that also has SBS 2003 and Symantec Antivirus. Other sites that have SBS, but a different antivirus program worked fine. We have identified any other characteristics that these two sites have in common.

*Because of the above, we suspected Symantec was the problem so, we contacted them and they suggested we stop all Symantec-related services on the Small Business Server, then have the user send the email again. We did this and the problem persisted, so Symantec says the problem is not with them.

What happens if you first save the attachment to the local hard drive. Can it be opened then?

I havent tried that. But I will.
What error is presented when you try to open the attachment.

A window opens up with this message:
Word viewer experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions
*Check the file permissions for the document or drive
*Make sure there is sufficent free memory and disk space
*Open the file with the Text Recovery converter
Is the same program and version that created the attachment available on the system that receives it and cannot open it?
It is being created by Word 2003. The same thing happens if you open it with word viewer on the server or Word 2003 on the workstation. (everybody has office 2003 pro) It also happens if you just attach a .jpg file
Any errors in the event logs on the problematic work station?
Good question. Why didn'y I check that? I will now.
When the email and attachment are sent to you, then forwarded to the problematic workstations, do you first open them? If you don't does it make any difference?
No difference. If it comes into the server it happens. Same problem on the server or a workstation.
White list / black list software on the problematic workstation? Outlook rules?
No any desktop, or server.
Last but not least, have you considered exorcism for the problematic workstation? :-)
Send me one. I'll pay
Joe

The following is rather confusing, but I have tried to give all the details I
could.

I have one user whose email ATTACHMENTS from her home computer can not be
opened on two different SBS compters. Two other SBS servers have no trouble
opening her email attachments. The email is always delivered. One anomally to
this equation is a .txt file will open OK.

If her email is sent to me, then I forward it to the SBS server it opens OK.

She has no trouble with any other users (friends with home email acounts)
opening her mail attachments.

It is not a virus. Three of the servers have the same version of symantec AV
and one opens it OK. All three of these servers pop their email from network
solutions and they also use Symantec.

You can open the attachment OK, at the mailbox at network solutions BEFORE
it is poped into the SBS server. If you forward it to an outside email acount
from the SBS account the attachment can not be opened. The server appears to
do someting to the document.

There are 25 other accounts on this server that have no problem.

Two of us have been working on this for weeks. We are stumped! Help would be
appreciated.
