While I have no experience with Mainpipe Fax Boards, I agree that they,
along with other manufactures such as BrookTrout, are different from
internal modems, in particular internal "win modems" that have little
processing capability and rely on software running on the server for most of
their functionality.
I should have mentioned them as an alternative.

Hi Larry,
Not all boards are created equal... the Mainpine fax boards have a feature
which allows each port to be reset under software control. This is used
by some fax software vendors to automatically restart a port on demand.
