I have a XP notebook that connects perfectly when it's wired. When I
try to go wireless, through the Linksys Wireless Router (which is
configured with WPA), my notebook can see it (View Wireless Networks)
and I can highlight it and click "Connect", but it never comes back
and asks me for a password/passphrase. It just returns to the "View
Wireless Network" dialog box. I've even tried to manually set it up
(in View Wireless Networks - Advanced). Is there any SBS configuration
to be done for wireless computers? Here's our setup...
DSL Modem (in Bridge Mode)
-Linksys Wireless Router WRT54G (Wireless enabled and configured)
--Linksys Switch
---Linksys Switch
----SBS 2003 Server
In addition to Merv's suggestions ...
[1] Try _temporarily_ disabling security on the LinkSys to see if you
can then connect. If so, it's a security issue. If not, it's something
else. If it *IS* a security issue, verify the WPA encryption type (TKIP
or AES) on the laptop matches the setting on the LinkSys. If they are
mismatched, the laptop won't connect.
[2] On the laptop make sure the wireless NIC is *NOT* being managed by a
vendor utility. Always configure so Windows manages this. Among other
things, this enables the computer to get an IP address prior to login.
[3] On the laptop verify the Wireless Zero Configuration service is set
to Automatic startup and is actually started.
