Re: Backups Failing with error code 0X80070458

Hi Robert

Many thanks for your reply.

I trieds the steps as provided & it was the RSM database that was corrupt.
I renamed NTMSDATA & then restarted storage service & this allowed backups
to run correctly so many thanks for your assistance

Regards

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

From your description, I know that on SBS server, the NTbakcup failed and
you get error 0x80070458 in the backup log. If that's not right , please
don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research on the error message, please try the following steps
to see if the problem can be resolved:

Step 1: In the backup log, I found "Unable to detect tape drive or tape
media.". The problem may cause be caused by backup device. Please check if
it's in the HCL list.

HCL list:
http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/

You can disconnect and reconnect the tape drive, test again. Please also
contact the hardware vendor to install the latest driver.

Step 2: Please backup to local hard disk and see if the issue will
reoccur.
We do this step to see if the problem is caused by you tape.

1. Click Star and select Run.
2. Input ntbackup, click OK and then click Next.
3. Select Back up files and settings and click Next.
4. Select choose what to backup and click Next.
5. Choose the item to backup and click Next.
6. Select location to save your backup, please select a folder on local
hard disk.
7. Click finish and see if the same issue will reoccur.

Step 3: The issue occurs when RSM database is corrupted, please check the
following:

1. Run services.msc
2. Disabled the Removable Storage Service.
3. Navigate to c:\windows\system32\NTMSdata
4. Rename the file NTMSDATA to NTMSDATA.OLD
5. Enable the Removable Storage Service.
6. Try again.

Step 4: The backup device may conflict with other USB device, please
uninstall drivers for any removable storage devices (USB Hard Drives, Zip
drives, etc...) and unplug them, then try again.

Step 5: This problem may occur if your tape drive supports tapes with
different media block sizes. When you configure a backup by using the SBS
2003 Server Management console, the backup program selects the first tape
type that is available, and this selection may not correspond to the tape
that is in the drive. To fix this, please install the hotfix in the
following KB:

"The requested media failed to mount" error message when you try to
perform
a backup in Windows SBS 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=831664

If the problem persists, please help me collect the following information
for further research:

1. MPS Report

1) Download MPS report tool from:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE
2) Run the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.exe on the server box.
3) Wait for 10~15 minutes.
4) Open Windows explorer, navigate to
%SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\cab\
5) Send the .cab file to us.

2. Backup log in C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data folder.

Please send the information to v-robeli@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with subject:
40186911 41265690-Backups Failing with error code 0X80070458.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)
