Re: SBS SP2 but Win Update wants patch for SP1 but

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

R2 and SP2 are two separate things. I'm not sure if there is shipping media
that contains Windows Server 2003 SP2 or not, but it's very likely that you
are running R2 with Windows Server 2003 SP1.

If you open Start -> Run and type "winver" without the quotes, the Windows
Version information should clearly state which Windows Server service pack
you're running. If it's SP1, as I think it probably is, please let WSUS
install those patches. Then if you are interested in installing Service
Pack 2, you can let WSUS do that as well. See this KB before installing
SP2:

Hello Windows Small Business Server 2003 experts,

We have SBS SP2 installed. In fact our original distribution says
"Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Premium Edition". So, Service
Pack 2 was installed as part of the original install.

For some reason Windows Update wants to us to install "Windows Small
Business Server 2003 SP1 Update KB909988".

I don't think this should happen - Windows Update should recognize SP2
installed and not ask for patches applicable to SP1. I am concerned
that installing a SP1 patch on an SP2 system will have bad effects
somewhere down the road if not immediately.

What is the best way to deal with this to assure there are no bad
effects?

Any advice or pointers would be of assistance.

PS: I have read http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=427436 but
I don't think this applies because or our original distribution
containing SP2)
