Re: Disaster Restore SBS2003

I'm thinking you won't need to worry about Motherboard and/or NIC drivers as
your restore should take care of those.

Connect a spare workstation or laptop dieclty to a port on the router. Put
this computer in a workgroup. Give it a static IP address in hte raneg of
hte LAN side of the router (192.168.1.x); a Default Gateway of the IP
address of the router; and a Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Now go to:

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (32-bit x86)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=95AC1610-C232-4644-B828-C55EEC605D55&displaylang=en

Down the Win2003 SP2 exe file to the computer and then copy it to a CD or
USB flash drive.

Now, install the original SBS 2003 CD1. Then insert the CD (or flash drive)
with the Win2003 SP2 .exe file and upgrade the server. After that, restore
your server per the link that Larry gave you: (download it with the
computer attached to the router and then print it out, or just open it up
and follow the restore steps):

(I'm assuming your "new C: partition" is at least large enough to hold all
the data that was on the old C: partition).

I am trying to restore Small Business Server 2003 that had all the latest
updates installed as of 1/1/08. However, I tried installing from the
original SBS2003 disk stopping with the "continue setup" after the server
rebooted. Installed necessary MB and NIC drivers. Installed SBS2003 SP1.
Restored from the full backup (backed up entire system with windows NT
backup
including system state). For the restore I had it overwrite any files
with
restored files and in the advanced screen - had all 4 lines checked as I
read
in one of the discussions and the restore completed and seemed to go ok
other
than the warning about restoring to a server that does not have exchange
running on it. But when I restarted the server, it will not boot but
gives
me the error something like unable to load dll to HAL or something like
that
- I thought I was missing another update relase but how do I get them if I
cannot connect the server to the internet until I get it restored. I
trying
one more time from scratch right now. If you have any more suggestions,
they
would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

John... you're looking for Windows 2003 SP2. SBS 2003 SP2 doesn't
exist.
(See Larry's link).

Options:

Windows 2003 SP1 + SBS 2003 SP1
Windows 2003 SP2 + SBS 2003 SP1
Windows 2003 SP1 + SBS 2003 SP1, then install Windows 2003 SP2

IE in High Security Mode: add "*.microsoft.com" (no quotes) to
trusted
sites on the server or download Windows 2003 SP2 from a workstation.

I've looked all over Microsoft site (except the right place) where
can I
go
to download SBS2003 SP2 on a separate computer than the server (ie at
home)?
Also, I tried adding microsoft update to the trusted sites with the
box
unchecked and all I get is the IE site - cannot find web page. If I
just
open IE I get the message that IE is in "high security mode". when I
check
the status - it says connected. Here is my setup:

As I remember this, you need only the Windows Service Packs. Not
updates, not application updates or service packs. You should be
able
to connect a computer to the internet and pull down Windows SP2, if
that is what you are missing.

I had to resize the partitions on my RAID1 array and now I
cannot
get the
backup restored. I followed the article I found in other
threads
but I am
having a major problem. I have reinstalled SBS to the point the
server
restarts and wants me to continue setup. I canceled out of that
and
installed drivers for the MB and 2nd NIC which shows connected
but
I cannot
access the internet because IE is in "high security mode" and
will
not allow
access to any site that is not https: which update.microsoft is
not
so how do
I get SBS to update to the same level as my backup when I cannot
connect to
the update site? I have disks for sp1 which I installed but I
cannot get any
more updates until I connect to the update web site. I tried
restoring
without the updates and it does not work very well
