Hello Jonathan,
Thank you for posting here. Let's also thank Pedro for the input.
According to your description, I understand that get error when you try to
open fax tif attachment in Outlook 2007. If I have misunderstood the
problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.
By default, the limit for a Unicode .pst file in Outlook 2007 is configured
to be 20 GB
The .pst file has a different format and folder size limit in Outlook 2007
and in Outlook 2003

Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:
Step 1: From your description, the issue reoccurred several times. I think
this issue cause by the antivirus software real-time scans the Temporary
Internet Files folder. The Temporary Internet Files maybe corrupted by the
antivirus software.
I suggest you uninstall any antivirus software on the problematic client,
and do clean boot on it to narrow down this issue:
To clean boot the problematic computer, please use the steps below:
a. Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks). Click OK.
b. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click to select
the Selective Startup button.
c. Click to clear the check mark from the "Load startup items" below
Selective Startup.
d. Click the Services tab, click to check the "Hide All Microsoft Services"
box, and remove all the check marks from the remained Non-Microsoft
Services.
e. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.
f. After restarting, please check whether this issue will reoccur.
Step 2: Empty the Secure Temporary File folder of Outlook 2007:
1. Click Start and select Run.
2. In the Run box, type "regedit" without quotation marks and press Enter.
3. Locate the following registry key.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security
4. Locate the value OutlookSecureTempFolder on the right pane.
5. Double click the value and copy the value data.
6. Click Start->Run. In the Run box, paste the data and click Ok.
7. Empty the folder.
Then, test this issue.
If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:
Please capture screenshots on the error messages "unable to create fax.tif"
and send the pictures to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
I hope these steps will give you some help.
Thanks and have a nice day!
Happy New Year!
Best regards,
Terence Liu(MSFT)

| I am having problems with viewing faxes which are tif attachments in
outlook.
|
| Background system information:
| Win2003SBS Prem. Network with mail system configured to deliver all mail
to
| receptionist with faxes received as .tif attachments. This user recently
had
| a new PC which is running Vista 64 bus. with Outlook 2007. The user
account
| has administrative rights to the local machine. As this user receives all
of
| the companyâ??s mail and forwards it on to others she has an Exchange
mail box
| that it is a struggle to keep below 2Gbs (which seems to be a limit).
|
| More detail on problem and attempted resolutions:
| Initially the problem was reported that multipage faxes would only
display
| the first page and if you tried to open page 2 you were shown a page from
| another fax from months ago. However the default .tif viewer could handle
| multipage faxes if used independently of Outlook and if the e-mail, with
fax
| attachment was forwarded it another user it could be opened (i.e. the
file
| itself was OK). I logged in as administrator and had no problem so I
| uninstalled and reinstalled Office and the problem went away. A few days
| later the user was back with â??unable to view faxes at allâ?? on
clicking on the
| attachment you get an unable to create fax.tif . On searching this group
I
| found others with a similar problem and the solution was to delete temp
files
| in that users
| ..\temporary internetfiles\OLKxx\*.* problem solved. A few days later
| problem returns this time I find I can not get to the OLK directory as
user
| or administrator due to corruption in the tree (tried to reapply rights
and
| take ownership but unable to get into â??temporary internet filesâ?? or
sub-dirs.
| Managed to delete and re create dirs â?? problem solved. User back again
today,
| same problem, but this time no obvious corruption, no files in OLK dir
the
| only new twist is on clicking the .tif the bottom pane now displays
| â??The file cannot be previewed because of a problem with the following
| previewer:
| Microsoft office image previewer
| To open the file in its own program, double-click it.â??
| Dbl clicking brings up an â??Open or Saveâ?? dialogue box, Open gets you
â??unable
| to create fax.tifâ?? save lets you brows to a folder and click Save but
| regardless of where you try and save nothing happens (no error msg). If
you
| right click the fax you can â??copyâ?? but when you try and â??pasteâ??
nothing
| happens and no error message. Creating a new text file the OLK dir is not
a
| problem.
| I have two other vista machines with the same O/S & hardware spec but the
| users run Outlook 2003, a run time Access app and no other Office
software
| (no problems but very light users Mail or Office apps).
|
| Something is obviously not happy and causing corruption but what? Any/all
| thoughts gratefully received.
|
| Jonathan Jackson.
